WSCS Hns Christmas Party
The December meeting of
the Woman's Society of
Christian Service was held at
the church Tuesday, Decem
ber 11.
Mrs. Nellie Wilkins had
charge of the short business
session after which Mrs. C.
L. Gwaltney gave the story
of the Birth of Jesus from
Luke 2.
The annual Christmas par
ty followed with games ap
nropriate for the occasion.
Mrs. Ernest Holbert and Mrs.
Elmer Griffin, dressed as
Santa and his wife, gave out
the Christmas gifts.
The fellowship hall of the
church was beautifully decor
ated by Mr=. Griffin.
Hostesses, Mrs. Griffin.
Miss Leah Mann, and Mrs.
Connor served fruit cake,
Russian Tea, nuts and mints
to the eighteen present.
Mrs. Dunton Speaks To Circle
Mrs. Rupert Dunton was
guest speaker at the regular
meeting of the Morning Cir
cle of the Methodist church
Tuesday morning at the home
of Mrs. Vance Robertson.
She spoke most interestingly
on her Bible Teaching wor'
at Swannanoa She also told
of some of her experiences
and her background before
coming to Warren Wilson
where her husband is on the
staff.
During the business the
members voted to give a gift
of money to the lady at the
Sanatorium whom the WSCS
sponsors and also a gift of
money to the Juvenile Cen
ter.
This was a covered dish
luncheon and twelve mem
bers and visitors enjoyed the
dinner and meeting. Gifts
were exchanged and Mrs.
Robertson had choir hoys and
girls as favors for the guests.
Methodist
The Methodist Youth Fel
lowship will present a three
act Christmas play Sunday
night at 7 o'clock. The play,
“His Christmas Welcome” is
being directed by Mr. and
Mrs. Roy Franklin, counse
lors. Everyone is asked to
bring a gift of food or money
wrapped in white and present
it at the alter for the needy
families of the community at
the conclusion of the play.
The monthly meeting of
the Official Board of the
church met Sunday night at
7 p.m.
MYF Suli-District Council
meeting and MYF Sub-Dis
trict meeting was held at
Tabernacle church Monday
evening with a good number
attending from the local
church. Tlie Sub-district will
hold a watch night service at
the Swannanoa Church New
Years Eve.

Signatures of Wires
Mary Jones married John
T. Smith. How could she sign
her name to contracts and
other legal documents?
The generally accepted
legal way is for her to sign
by simply writing “Mary J.
Smith.” If she prefers, or if
the form of the contract
specifies the full middle

name, she may write “Mary
Jones Smith.”
Tliis is the customary form
of signature used by a mar
ried woman when she signs
as maKer of a promissory
note or as drawer of a check.
Government saving' bonds,
corporate shares, shares in
federal savings and loan as
sociations, shares of building
and loan associations, deeds
to land, titles to automobiles,
and insurance policies are
generally issued to married
women in this manner.
Indorsements or transfers
of ownership of property ev
idenced by writing should, of
course, follow the form of
name used in such docu
ments. For example, if Mrs.
Smith receives a check to
Mrs. John T. Smith, she
should indorse by writing
“Mrs. John T. Smith."
There is nothing illegal in
Mrs. Smith signing her con
tracts or documents as “Mrs.
John T. Smith.” They are not
void if she does. In fact,
many wives sign thier checks
in this form. Their signature
cards at the bank are in this
form. If such wives want to
affect a change of signature
at the bank, they should ad
vise the band.
A person can use any
name or scribbling he wants
as a signature. In business
and legal matters, it is mere
ly more correct for a mar
ried woman to sign her name
as “Mary J. Smith” or “Mary
Jones Smith.” The prefix
“Mrs.” is not used as part of
the signature.
Emily Post says: “The only

signs her name ‘Mrs.’ are
these: in a hotel register, to
a business telegram, to a ser

“(Mrs. John T. Smith).”
