She was named after a
queen, even prior to the
siCTin<r of the Declaration of
independence—which perhaps
accounts for her regal bear
j lns’’ stately buildings and
progressive and independent
j spn it. She’s the largest city
• ii the two Carolinas, boastful
of a population of well over
-00,000 and a center of com
merce and industry as well.
In addition to these im
pressive credentials, Char
lotte offers fine sight-seeing
and recreational opportuni
ties, excellent accomodations
and a wide variety of foods
to her many visitors. We
were again impressed with
these facts upon a visit earl
ier this month.
Charlotte was named for
the wife of King George III
of I.ngland, Queen Charlotte.
On May 20, 1775, its patriots
signed the Mecklenburg De
claration of Independence, a
document that predated the
American Colonies’ Declara
tion of Independence in Phil
adelphia by one full year.
harlotteans are proud of
their early history as evidenc
ed in the naming of a local
college, one of the more im
pressive boulevards and a
leading hotel.
We had no difficulty in
finding suitable family ac
commodations in the center
of the busy metropolis. By
popular demand (of our
children), we first walked on
over to the downtown library
facility which the children
claimed had been designed
solely for the youngsters of
the community. This we
found to be partially true as
evidenced by an abundance
of child-sized furniture and
a vast collection of books,
films and phonograph records
geared to the child’s inter
ests. Modern and well plan
ned to the last detail, this
library is an impressive show
place and invariably of in
terest to the downtown visit
or.
Our next family confer
ence resulted in a drive
north on Independence Boul
evard to the site of the
Colisem and its neighbor,
Ovens Auditorium. We found
the Coliseum to be a beauti
fully-designed multi-purpose
building with a silvery dome
ascending' high into the air.
It is claimed that “a 10-story
building can fit into the big
dome with room to spare.”
Held here annually are out
standing sports events, in
cluding college and profes
sional basketball, profession
al boxing and wrestling, ice
hockey, ice follies, circuses,
rodeos and swimming shows.
This was also the location of
'ast year’s Trade Fair and
j will be the scene of a similar
event this coming spring!
Ovens Auditorium, of mod
ern decor also, is complete
and plush in every detail,
and, in sheer beauty, sur
passes any we have seen. Tt
is correctly proclaimed one of
the South’s great entertain
ment centers.
We had heard much about
Charlotte’s renowned liberal
arts school, Queens College,
and nearby Lake Wylie. We
viewed both and each lived
up to advance expectations.
The upshot was a parental
promise to return to Lake
Wylie next summer for wat
er skiing and fishing and an

want to go!”
Time limitations did not
permit completion of our
planned sightseeing schedule;
however, we did have time
that evening to enjoy the
many-hued lights and the
hustle, bustle and excitement
of Charlotte’s “Gay White
Way.” We capped the even
ing of fun with a delicious
meal at one of the downtown
restaurants. Next time over
we’re going to try the
French restaurant on the

N. C. MOTOR CLUB
SUPPORTS PROGRAM
FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY
The N. C. State Motor
Club today threw its support
solidly behind Gov. Terry
Sanford’s proposed legislative
program for traffic safety.
The Governor has asked
civic clubs and other organi
zations to give him their ad
ice on five “action items,”
which include stricter licens
ing requirements of teen
age drivers, scientific tests
for persons charged with
drunken driving, additional
Highway Patrolmen, ad
ditional traffic engineers,
and legislation to begin im
plementing the court im
provement amendment to the
State Constitution.
He also requested opinion
on two items on which no of
ficial endorsement has yet
been given: legislation to
establish a compulsory per
iodic safety equipment in
spection on motor vehicles
and requiring the installa
tion of seat belts on all new
cars for sale in the state af
ter a certain date.
“The N. C. State Motor
Club, which represents more
than 100,000 motorists in
the state, stands squarely be
hind Gov. Sanford’s efforts
to obtain legislation which
can serve only to protect the
motorist himself,” declared
Thomas B. Watkins, presi
dent of the motor club and
the National Automobile As
sociation.

Stars like frosty snowflakes glisten,
Trees are still as though they listen
For the rush of angel wings—
(Hush, little Son, Thy Mother sings!)
Night is filled with wonders rare—
Shepherds, princes kneeling there,
Watched by cattle standing nigh—
(Hush, little Son, and lullaby!)
Angels, shepherds, kings depart,
Their words are secret in my heart.
My world is. cradled safely here—
(Hush, little Son, Thy Mother’s near!)
