NO PAY — Just before Christmas a manager of a Raleigh store reported that he was robbed of about $6,000. It happened on a morning. He had got into his car with the money to go to the bank. He told how the robber jumped up out of the back seat, forced him to drive south of town, took the money, etc. As of Dec. 30, the robbery had not been solved. Although most large stores carry insurance against rob bery, the Raleigh store will not be able to recover from its insurer the funds its man ager said he lost. He violated some of the basic rules laid down by companies which in sure against robbery, etc. These are, generally speaking, as follows: (1) Today’s receipts must be deposited today—by night de pository or otherwise. (2) The depositor should, if possi ble, walk to the bank, should not go by automobile or other motor vehicle. (3) The de positor, when he goes to make his deposit, should have an assistant with him. We noted several reports of robberies in December — a favorite month for maurauders —and in each instance one of the above rules was vio lated. George Uzzell of Salisbury, who will be one of the oldest men in the Legislature from point of service—he became 59 Nov. 23—says he is going to see what can be done about getting the Ninth District, now Republican, redistricted. Object: to get Yadkin and Davie in some other — any i other — district — and try to swing Ninth back to Demo crats. What about the Eighth, George, where Jonas Jolts? Tar Heel of the Week in the Dec. 30 issue of the Raleigh News & Observer was James Thomas Broyhill, the Ninth’s new GOP Congressman. Biggest supporter of Down town in North Carolina seems to be the banks, all of which are building or planning to build parking facilities or of fice structures in Downtown Hearts — with Wachovia re cently announcing huge new projects in Raleigh, Salisbury, and Winston-Salem. Shop talk here reports that street sales of the Raleigh News & Observer increased over 3.000 copies in the month following its price increase from 5 cents to 10 cents per | copy. Main reasons given: even money (as compared with 7 cents for some other dailies) and the fact that the street salesmen have greatly increas ed profit and do better job. The Governor had a little meeting in his office last week with representatives wanting some changes made in the hodge-podge of licenses re quired for all types of bus inesses. He reportedly admit ted the mess—which he in herited — and asked Revenue Commissioner Bill Johnson to report with recommendations, etc., in time for his February Budget message. By D. C. Nichols Field Representative “Do you have to have a birth certificate in order to draw youi social security?” This question has bothered a great many people and has caused a lot of worry. The answer to this question is “No.” It is true, of course that you must submit proof of your correct date of birth in order to draw your social security retirement benefits. But to do this it is not ne cessary to have a birth cer tificate. The social security office will accept many different things as proof of your age, and chances are you have I one or more of these “accep table proofs” right now. Here are just a few of the things you can use to prove your age: a record of your birth in the old family Bible or other family record, school records, voting records insur ance policies, employment | records, or your marriage certificate, baptism certifi cate, or a military service record. If you have any of the things mentioned you should have no trouble in proving your age to the social seeur i t y office - - provided that these proofs are old enough and otherwise acceptable. This means that the docu ments must be unaltered and, if a family record, in ink, and preferably recorded over 25 years ago. Many people delay apply ing for their social security because they do not feel that they can prore their age. Actually, there are very few eases in which a person can not obtain some proof of his age. We advise you to contact the social security as soon as you believe that you are old enough to apply for benefits. Do not delay, because if you wait too long you may lose some benefits. If you do not have satisfactory proof of your age when you come in to apply, the social security office will make every effort to help you get it. If you already have proof of your age do not forget to bring it with you when you apply for benefits—it will speed up your claim.
