C. OPEN ALL YEAR Phone NO-9-8734 First of all her real name is Margaret McLarty, daught er of the Rev. and Mrs. James McLarty, new pastor of the Black Mountain Methodist church. She claims Asheville as her home town, possibly because most of her life with her family was spent there while her father was pastor of Asheville churches and she attended the public schools. Margaret is a graduate of Greensboro College where she majored in voice and was soprano soloist with the glee club. At the present she is continuing her vocal studies with Bernard Taylor in New York. “As a child she always pre tended to be an actress”, said her mother, “and al though one recent news re lease stated that I had urged her to be a teacher, I can’t remember trying to guide her in this direction, “maybe so, or perhaps she only thought I would be disappointed if she didn’t teach.” At any rate, she left her home state to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse un der Sanford Meisner, this fol lowed a season in “The Lost Colony” at Manteo. Her first Broadway appearance “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” is currently enjoying a success ful run but she has played in several off Broadway shows such as “The Fantasticks”, an 8 month long musical which she loved; “Summer of the Seventeenth Doll”, ‘Many Loves” and “One For The Dame”. Her TV experience has been just as varied for she has appeared on the Arm strong Circle Theatre, Naked City, True Story, Lamp Uuto My Feet and the Dave Gar roway show. She has been cast as Lisa Hughes in “As the World Turns”, not a very likeable character but evident ly well portrayed by Miss Ful ton because she receives stacks of “hate” letters after each performance. Her stu dio likes this too because it indicates to them that the viewer takes his television seriously and this is good for their business . It is satisfy ing to the young actress too, as is the woman she pictures, she is doing her work in a convincing manner. There are several points of interest here to bring to you. Margaret has a lovely soprano voice which only once has the serial writer used to advantage and this was some time ago when Lisa sang a lullaby to her son. Tommy. Another interesting thing is that people approach her in public with remonstran ces on her treatment of her husdand (TV). Bus passen gers have even been known to change their seat to avoid contact with the home wreck er she pictures, as though she had leprosy or something con tagious. So far there is only one movie to her credit, “Girls of the Night”. “We were sorry she felt it necessary to change her name”, her mother said, “Al though we understand because it was confusing when she first started working in New York and she kept getting calls for work for a Mary McCarty, a comedienne. The “Eileeen” came from no where in particular, the “Ful ton” was lifted from her uncle Fulton Glenn of Ashe ville.” Mrs. McLarty has recently returned from a visit to her popular daughter whom she saw in the matinee perform ance of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” This is such an exhaustingly drama tic show there are two casts, one for matinee, another for evening. As Honey, a sweet talking little housewife, she dances a little and is fright ened by everything. “You can’t imagine how hard she works”, her mother told me, “she leaves home before 7 in the morning and on afternoons before her TV show she practices from 1-6 in addition has dress rehear sal and a third run-through— all this while she is doing her Broadway matinee twice a week. Of course we are proud of her and long for the day to come when we can go to a musical in which she stars.” Neither of us saw “The Fantasticks” and that music is so lovely.” .. I'm glad we chose electric heat/' says Mrs. Ernest Hilfiker of Black Mountain, N. C "Over a period of years, we have used many different types of heat including gas, oil and hot water. However, our electric heat has proven to be the most economical and satisfactory we have ever had. The operating costs are even cheaper than had been expected. "The inexpensive installation cost, the quietness of the system, the absence of unpleasant odors are just a few of the many features of our electric heat. "I can say without reservation, I'm glad we chose electric heat." Mrs. Ernest Hilfiker Over 6,500 families served by CP&L now know the comfort and satisfaction of living in a home equipped with flameless electric heat. No obligation, of course, CAROLINA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY An inverter-owned, taxpaying, public utility company Margaret loves children and the small child who played the part of Tommy recently lov ed his TV mother, too. ‘You could just see how they loved each other and it was so na tural in one show that the child said to her “You are the nicest Mother’ ”, which wasn’t even in the script. Tommy has been several people over the years because even a TV character must change with the years, but the little four year-old she will remember for years to come. We have heard that here and there over the town there are spots of good and bad re ception for television sets. Of all places to have poor (and from some chanels, no) re ception the Methodist parson age, whose occupants have an intense interest in the 1:30 show each day would have to be the place. To see their actress daughter they need to go to somone else’s setl There has been so very much crammed into these six years Margaret has been in New York I know there is some I have omitted. One summer there was summer stock in which she was cast in “Blue Denim” and most re cent accomplishment is that of Anne Rutledge in “Abe Lincoln in Illinois” with Hal Holbrook. Another moment to remem ber for her was the visit from for it shows that, despicable Noel Coward who came back stage following a performance of “Virginia Woolf”. She loves New York and is especially fond of Central Park, near which is her apart ment. Her mother too finds New York a thrilling place and naturally the visits to their daughter and the studio in which she works is something to which she looks forward with enthusiasm.
