OLD FORT NEWS BERTHA GREENE Phone 668-7752 Old Fort, N. C. Personals The Golden Age Club of Old Fort Methodist Church will not have their meeting in January due to so much illness. Mrs. Annie Jordan had as guests in her home for the Christmas holidays her two sisters from Asheville, Mrs. Lina Robinson and Mrs. Mar garet Craven. David Allison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Meloy Allison who has had two years in service overseas is home to stay. Buster and Jimmy Allison, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allison, have been ill at home for two weeks. They are im proving. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Pack at Marion General hospital last Satur day for treatment. Ben F. Elliott was admitted to Marion General hospital last Saturday. The Youth Fellowship of the Ebenezer Methodist Church gave a Christmas program last Sunday night which was well attended. Mrs. Nora Setzer had all her children at home as guests for Christmas dinner except her daughter Mrs. Ruby Mc Arthers. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. James P. Ray at Marion General hospital Dec. 26. Miss Geneva Steppe receiv ed word last Friday of the death of her cousin, John Hudson. He died in his home at Spartanburg. Mrs. Gladys Kanipe and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Carr spent several days last week in Roxboro with Mrs. Kanipe and Mrs. Carr’s sister and brother, Mrs. Lola Thomas and Joel Warren. Mr. and Mrs. Don E. Bray and two children Mike and Ann of Shelby spent several days last week with Mrs. Bray’s mother, Mrs. Roy Early and other relatives. Mr. and Mrs. William Mc Arthur and two children Brenda and Charles of Chad bourn spent last week end with Mrs. McArthur’s mother, Mrs. Nora Setzer. A. Allison last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Evans and Judy of Black Mountain spent Christmas with Mrs. Evan’s mother, Mrs. Geneva Tisdale. Mr. and Mrs. ronnie Aiiison left last Sunday to spend Christmas holidays with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Allison. Douglas Allison is home for the Christmas holidays from Berea College at Berea, Ky. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Meloy Allison. Mr. and Mrs. Flint Nor wood and daughter, Margaret Louise, of Chester, S. C., spent last week end with Mrs. Norwood’s mother, Mrs. R. C. Laughridge. Mr. and Mrs. Don Lyda of Melbourne, Fla., spent several days last week with Don’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Lyda. Billy Arney, who is a pat ient in a Charlotte hospital came home last Tuesday to spend Christmas day with his family. He returned to Char lotte Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Ted Carver, Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Silver and two sons, Mike and Gary, left Dee. 19 for San Diego to spend Christmas with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bud Carver. OBITUARY Thomas P. Jackson Thomas Pierce Jaskson, 92, of Old Fort, died last Satur day morning in a Burke County hospital after a long illness. Surviving are three sons, Ed. and Bill, both of Old Fort, Rt. 1, and Frank of Marion, Rt. 2; three daugh ters, Mrs. Carrie Parker of Spartanburg, Mrs. Carl Brown of Marion, and Mrs. Ed. Jack son of West Marion; 18 grand- ! children and 35 great-grand children. Mr. Helen Hensley has re turned to her home following a two weeks stay in St. Jo seph’s hospital where she re ceived treatment. WSCS Meets The Woman’s Society of Christian Service held their December meeting at the church with the Morning Circle having charge of the worship service, program and social hour. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. Er nest Holbert, president of the Society. . Mrs. Harry Barnes led in the devotional period. Mrs. Bill Nolan introduced Samuel E. Leonard of Montreat who gave the program for the evening. He showed slides he had taken on his trip to The Holy Land. This was a very timely program for this season. Following the program everyone was invited to the basement of the church for the social hour. The tab were decorated most beauti fully and delightful refresh ments were served to the twenty members and guests present. Mrs. Leuschke Hostess The Christmas meeting of the Swannanoa Garden Club was held with Mrs. George Leuschke in Grovemont. Dur ing the business session it was voted to give a basket of fruit to a needy family for Christmas. Girl Scout Troop r60 with their leader, Mrs. Desmond Hussey, and Mrs. Robert Da vidson, neighborhood chair man, were guests. Mrs. Joseph Dunglison gave a beautiful Christmas read ing. The members joined the Girl Scouts in singing Christmas carols. The Garden Club sponsors this Scout Troop and they presented them with a Girl Scout Flag. Delicious refreshments were served by the hostess, assist ed by Mrs. Herman Cole and Mrs. Eugene Loven. The January meeting will be with Mrs. W. M. Venable at her home in Bee Tree Heights. Groups Enjoy Caroling On Tuesday night members of the Methodist church and choir members went to the Sanatorium for their annual singing of Christmas hymns to the patients. There was also a group from the Free Will Baptist church caroling for the patients. On other nights last week groups from the other churches in Swan Accept our best wishes for a suc cessful New Year. Wright, invited a group of friends to meet at her home Tuesday evening and from there go caroling. Those enjoying the evening were Glenda Lee, Sherrv Strickland. Kathy Rhodes, Shelley Connor, Ma lona Robertson, Clara Smith, Sue Hunnicutt, Shirley Sil vers, Diane Smeltzer, Terry and Mrs. Wright. On their return to the Wright’ the girls were ser ved hot chocolate, pretzels, and potato chips. On Thursday evening Miss Leah Mann took the members of her Junior Sunday School class caroling to homes of shut-ins in the community. Hayes Connor and Ted Smith assisted Miss Mann in tak ing the young people in Mr. Smith’s truck. Miss Mann, assisted by Mrs. Earl Wad dell, served the group refresh ments in the basement of the Methodist dhurch on their return. On Saturday evening the Junior High Sunday School ie«t:ie»gmwg<gtg,g'€tgigigigig»cic»gcw class of the Methodist church had their Christmas party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Coman. Games were enjoyed by the group and Christmas cookies, nuts, punch, and candy were served. Hayes Connor is teachei ot this class. Jan. 2, 1964 PeronaU Miss Kym Fowler of Char lotte left Tuesday following several days visiting Mr. and Mrs. Haywood Farr. Mr. and Mrs. Latt McMa han and Mrs. Jim Earley spent last week-end in Kings tree, S. C., visiting with Mr. and Mrs. David McMahan. Mrs. Earley spent Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bal lew in Marion. Rev. and Mrs. Ralph Mum power spent the holidays visiting with their son and family Ralph Jr., in Ander son, S. C. . Miss Helane Nichols _ of Richmond, Virginia visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nichols over the holi days. She is employed with the Life Insurance Company of Virginia. Happy New Year!
