HARDIN 3 PHONE: NO 9-7134 3 January 9, 1964 At the Church: “The Big Snow” just about paralyzed church activities „4ast week and no Prayer Ser vice was attempted on Wed nesday evening. Only 80 people managed to get to Sunday school on this first Sunday of 1964, but a few others made it for the 11:00 o’clock worship hour. January Bible Study which was to have begun January 1 is now scheduled for 6:30 P.M. Wednesday, January 8 and will continue for one and one-half hours each Wednes day until completed. This is a Church -wide activity, not con fined to any small group, so it is hoped a large number will participate. Pastor Ho cutt is the teacher. The book for study is “The Letter to the Ephesians” by Vaughan. In the Community: Miss Edith Van Duzer, whose birthday falls on Dec. 31, was delightfully surprised on last Tuesday afternoon when a half dozen friends bearing gifts and delectable refreshments (including a lovely cake with candles) drop ped in for a social hour. The party time was somewhat shortened because of the in tensity of the snowfall and the fear the guests had of not being able to get back to their homes, but “a good time was had by all.” Those pre sent were Mrs. S. C. Gill; Mrs. Mayme Gough; Mrs. Thelma Griffin; Mrs. Lucile Carroll; Misses - Grace and Mamie Meeks; the honoree and her sister, Mrs. B. S. Meeks. Mr. R. E. Teague has been quite sick for some days, but is much improved at this writing. Enroute from Ann Arbor, Mich., to their home in Col umbia, S. C., Mr. and Mrs. Seward Oliver spent Tuesday, RJUUUUA Dec. 31, with her sister, Mrs. E. F. Hardin and family. Miss Corrie Hardin of Greenville, S. C. accompanied her brother, Elbert F. Hardin, home on December 30 for a weeks’ visit with the Hardins and the nieces and nephews gathered there for the holi days. After two weeks of vaca tion in Fla., Mr. and Mrs. Willard Weeks reached home on Dec. 30, just in time to get “snowed in.” Most of their days were spent in St. Petersburg, with Mrs. Weeks’ sister, Mrs. S. F. Haney and her son, Step hen Haney, who is a student in Emory University of At lanta. Visiting time was al so shared with Mr. Weeks’ mother, Mrs. E. W. Weeks, who lives in St. Petersburg, too. Mr. and Mrs. Weeks wor shiped in two St. Petersburg churches. First Baptist and North East Baptist, where he spoke on Ridgecrest. Another Sunday they wor shiped in the Louisville, Ga. Baptist Church and were after wards entertained in the Pastor’s home at a special fel lowship for Intermediates. In Tampa, Fla., Mr. Weeks was the featured speaker at the annual banquet for Ridge crest summer staff members. This was held at Causeway Inn and 87 of their young people were present for the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Don Haney of Hampton, Va., moved last week into the little brick apartment belonging to Mrs. T. E. Walters. Mr. Haney is a pharmacist employed by Black Mountain Drug Co. Cards were received from Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Willis in Dallas, Texas, where they were spending Christmas with their son, Dean Willis, and his family. Capt. Charles Brittain of the Air Force, better known here as “Pete”, is now sta tioned in Scotland. Chap. (Lt. Com.) Nat Brit tain and his family are sta tioned in Clovis, New Mexico, where he serves at the Air Force Base. The children are enjoying: school life there. Their Christmas card to friends here included a Mis sions Calendar with the pic ture of little Cyndy on the January page. Weather conditions forced Rev. J. J. Johnson and Miss Cordelia to spend Christmas in Canton, but members of the family joined them there for celebration a few days later. A letter from Major James P. Harris, Jr. and his family, in Ankara, Turkey, tells of a happy Christmas vacation they spent in Athens, Greece. Warmer weather (about 60 deg.) and a Christian atmos phere in Athens made their surroundings much more pleasant than the chill of An kara and its Moslem trend. Major and Mrs. Harris, Mary Helen, Peggy, Jimmy, Tommy, and Louise are all looking forward to coming hack to the States six months hence when this tour of foreign duty will be over. We re joice with Mr. and Mrs. Paul Harris, Sr., in this anticipated reunion with their children. “One of the highlights of the trip to Athens”, writes Major Harris, “was our re turn to Ankara where Bob Hope and his troupe were just leaving following a perform ance. Tommy and Louise had a ball with Bob Hope who gave all three of the oldest children his autograph.” Mr. and Mrs. James Hos mer of Newport, Tenn., have a little daughter who arrived Dec. 13 and whose name is Jamie. These young people lived here in Ridgecrest about a year before being trans ferred to new work in Tenn. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Kin caid of King’s Mountain spent Saturday here, getting their home ready for a honey moon couple to live in for a If You Have— been on a trip entertained guests celebrated a birthday caught a big fish moved eloped had a baby been in a fight sold your hogs had an operation bought a car |1 i painted your house had company been married cut a new tooth sold out been robbed been shot stolen anything lost your hair been arrested OR DONE ANYTHING AT ALL Telephone, or Drop • Postcard, or Come In, or In Any Convaniont Way Inform LIB DINWIDDIE KEITH PHONE: NO 9-4101 For Peekin' Through the Keyhole NEW VINYL FOAM and WOOD WEATHERSTRIP FOR DOORS lortell FOAM FLEX DOORSTRIP PERMANENTLY BONDED by EXCLUSIVE NEW PROCESS • Install in as little as 10 minutes with saw, hammer and nails. • Nails over present door moulding or replaces it entirely. • Made of dear }4' x %’ wood moulding and closed cell vinyl foam— bonded by exdusive new process. • Remarkable new airtight weatherstrip keeps cold out, keeps heat in. • Durable foam edge absorbs door shock and noise—never absorbs moisture. • Fits snugly against even badly warped doors. Library New* Mrs. Sam Alexander, Li brary Board Chairman, wish es to say that the Swannanoa Library will be glad to ac cept books or gifts of money as a memorial to a bereaved person. Many families re quest that flowers be omitt ed and that a contribution be made to a cause or charity. Giving a good book to the library will be a lasting mem orial to the one in whose memory it is given. It would also be a nice way to honor a loved one by giv ing a book on a birthday or at Christmas time. In either case the family or honored person would receive a card from the library committee acknowledging the gift. The Library is open on Tuesday and Thursday even ings from 6:30-8:30 for the convenience of those who can not go during the daytime hours.
