S. of London, England Mrnther of the Hoard ot Lectureship of The Mother Church. The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston. Massachusetts This Lecture was Given at First Church of Christ, Scientist Asheville, N. C., Sunday, June 21st at 3:30 P. M. The lecturer was in troduced by Mrs. Charlotte M. Cordt meyer, Second Read er of the Church. The lecturer spoke substan tially as follows: Today’s growing interest in cniritnnl npalino many to wonder what Christian Science is and how it heals Let me begin oy quoting to you the definition which Mary Bakei Eddy, its Discoverei and Founder, herself gives in answer to the question “How would you define Christian Science?" She writes (Rudimental Divine Science 1: 2): “As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demon strating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony.” Healing in Christian Scien -e takes place through the utiliza tion of this law of God. this law of good. When the divine law of harmony is understood, accepted into thought, acknowledged as the only law. and lived in daily life, the inevitable consequence is healing Sometimes those who are not well acquainted with the teach ings of Christian Science ask why its adherents lay so much em phasis on the healing of phvsical disease. Let us see how Christ Jesus, the originator of Christian healing, viewed this particulai matter. You will recall that John the Baptist, wanting assurance of the authenticity of Jesus’ mission as the Messiah, sent his disciples to ask him (Luke 7 20): “Art thou he that should come? oi look we for another?” Without hesitation the Master immediately healed many who were infirm, blind and sick of many diseases Then, turning to his inquirers, he said “Go your way. and tell John what things ye have seen and heard how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the de d are raised, to the poor the gospel is oreached” (Luke 7:22). Thi was his an swer. Jesus knev that these healings were the sign of the ap pearing of the Christ, Truth, and he foretold that in the future those who believed what he said would perform even greater works than these. Healing is likewise the sign ol the authentic Christlike nature of Christian Science. This healing is, as in Jesus’ time, wholly spir itual. It take1 place through prayer—through turning to God. acknowledging the perfection of His universe and steadfastly denying the evidence of the senses, which would testify to the presence of some evil condition unlike God and contrary to His law. The resulting purification of thought is manifested to human view in the destruction of disease and discord of every kind. Christ’s Healing Power Available to A' Christ Jesus told nis disciples /I Ifi.lfil _IJ T unto you power to tread on ser pents and scorpions, and ovei all the power of the enemy.” Chris tian Science demonstrates that this great power “over all the power of the enemy’' is within reach of us all. We may all have it right now through the scien tific understanding o' God’s uni versal law of harmony and the regeneration which accompanies this understanding Spiritual power meets all human needs. It is “over all the pov/ei of the enemy.” It applies to every form of discord. Sin, insecurity, pov erty, loneliness, sorrow, slavery to any form of human tyranny, even world unrest can be over come through the utilization oi spiritual power. Christ Jesus gave his disciples power. How may t.e also have this healing power? Christian Science shows us how and ex plains its operation. The power that the Master gave his disciples was derived through understand ing—the understanding o’ God’s nature as omnipotent Love, the Father of all He taught them that man is the beloved child of God, inheritor of all the divine qualities, and he demonstrated how the exi .ssion of these qualities endows ime with divine power to cast out evil. The G cat Discovery From the First glimpse of Chris tian Science, the eternal Truth has been accompanied by signs of healing. The revelation "ame in 1866 to Mary Bakei Eddy as she la., dangerously ill afte a fall Accustomed as -he was through out her life to pray to God and to turn to hei Bible for comfort and help, she called for it now and in hei extremity opened it at the passage which relate; the healing by Christ .le us of the man sick of the palsy While pondering this accuurn Mrs Eddy suddenly game-, a glimpse of thf Principle under lying the healing power of God vvhrch was manifested by Christ Jesus. She saw ‘hat God. divine Mind, is the first and only cause and that adherence to 'hr First Commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me." casts out the evils of mortal mind thus healing the sick As immediately as the palsied man was restored to health, she herself rose up and walked Thereafter, her life was devoted to the discovery and elucidation ot the Christly method of divine healing and the utilization of it for the benefit of all mankind For twenty years prioi to this experience. Mrs Eddy had in vestigated the methods of medi cine and homeopathy Her ex perience in thi-e fields of thera peutics had convinced her that the cause of disease is mental and that the divine Mind alone can produce a cure. Now it was revealed to her that .rule all real being is the manifestation of God, the divine Mind, and is therefore perfect, 'he discords of huma. existence—even material existence itself—are images of erring, mortal thought They are the opposites of Truth, evolved by mortal mind This erring mortal, so-called mind, falsely believing in a power, presence and law apart from Go good produces its own phenomena in the material body and the woes of the flesh These are nevei more than the subjective state of mortal mind which seen real to the senses but which, in fact, have no more substance and per manence than shadows in a dream. Consequently, because material inharmony is produced mentally through fear, ignorance or sin, it I can be removed only through the action of the divine Mind When j one denies these errors and re places them with love, under- J standing, and other qualities ol God, spiritual regeneration takes place, and this finds its outtvard j manifestation in the healing of I material inharmony In ordei that the undei stand ing of God’s law might nevei again be lost Mrs. Eddy then I recorded her discovery in detail Her main work, the textbook of 1 Christian Science, “Science and i Health with Key to the Scrip tures.” contains a full expiana turn o* the Science of divine heal ing and, as its name implies, is in tended to be read in conjunction with the Bible. On the cover of this book and of all her other writings, appears the emblem ol the cross and crown encircled by Jesus’ words: “Heal the sick Raise the dead Cleanse the lep ers. Cast out demons.” When Christ Jesus sent out his disciples to preach the gospel to mankind he gave them instruc tion to heal, and we heai that they returned full of joy and gratitude for the wonderful works they were able to perform We have no record in the Bible that he withdrew 01 modified this in struction, and by healing .he sick herself and showing us how we may likewise demonstrate the healing Principle through the acknowledgment and application of God’s law ol universal har mony. Mrs. Eddy was faithful to the Master’s command. The Bible foretells the appear ing of the Comforter, the divine I message of Truth which would lead mankind into all truth Thousands whose lives have been transformed through Christian Science bear witness that this divine Science is that promised Comforter. Recognizing that it is through her discovery that they have gained a true understanding of God and of man’s unity with Him, Christia’ Scientists love and are grateful to Mary Bakei ■ I Eddy. They acknowledge hei to ■ be the revelator of Christ, Truth j to this age; they revere her be i cause she discovered the Science which Christ Jesus demonstrated inev trust ner as their Leader and daily strive to practice more effectively the divine Truth which she revealed. Explaining the source of his power tc heal, Christ Jesus told his disciples (John 14:10): "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.” He knew that it was through the Christ, the divine nature, that God gave him this power. This same Christ power is available to all men in proportion as they also reflec* the divine nature,—this is the great discovery that Mrs. Eddy has given to the world. Her own remarkable power to heal the sick sprang clearly from the spir itual Qualities she derived from God through Science—qualities wonderfully evident in her life. Christian Science reveals thai Spirit acts through its qualities to destroy not only the beliefs and propensities of mortal mind, but also the woes of the flesh which are the manifestation of these errors. Mrs Eddy says in Science and Health (p 243): “Truth, Life, and Love are a law of annihila tion to everything unlike them selves, because they dec'ar-> noth ing except God.” Accounts of Mrs. Eddy’s early tV-,0 htirjr'im ,,f ;ne m!- »••• •• - .. ,n. u c\p!e. oi lrutn anu u»vc, wmui 1 were latei to come to fruition ii. From this love grew the selfless, hard-working, dedi cated lift which brought forth th< j Church of Christ, Scientist, which ! in its turn is dedicated to the I salvation ol the world from sin > and suffering The Church of Christ. Scientist This Church, whose branches now encircle the globe, was originally conceived in 1879 on this simple and profound basis (Church Manual p 17): “To organize a church designed to commemorate the word and works of out Master, which should reinstate piimbivt Chris tianity and its lost element of healing" The element ol Christian heal ing permeates every activity of the Christian Science Church, indeed its many branches ir all ! parts ol the world are formed and established by grate'u! people who have themselves already ex perienced healing The several thousand practitioners listed in The Christian Science Journal i the weekly Lesson-Sermons, the i Church services and Sunday School exercises, the Reading j Rooms, periodicals and lectures 1 have all this same purpose ot ; healing. For example, a friend of mine was healed of a severe condition of eczema when she at tended her very first lecture on i Christian Science. A Healing of Eczima One Sunday morning a news paper advertisement for this lec ture caught the eye of this young woman She was an active mem ber of an >rthodnx Christian church, but when she saw the notice she felt drawn to atteno the lecture and find out more about Christian Science At the time she had been undei medical care for several months for the condition of eczema which cov ered both he’ hands, and was using various remedies for its relief hut Irnnwinp vprv little about Christian Science, it did not occui to her that her physical condition could in any way be improved by it Leaving her househoic tasks she put on her hat and hastened to the lecture. Throughout the hour she liste ed intently, en joyed what she heard and felt she would attend another lecture as the opportunity occurred. On her arrival home she went to the medicine cupboard to treat her hands with their usual lotion when suddenly she realized that the rash had almost disappeared One hour of learning about the Science of God Spirit, had achieved more foi her than months of reliance upon matter Without further material treat ment the condition entirely vanished within two days, never J to return. That was the end of the trouble Healings such as this are nor mal and scienti'ic, they are not supernatural. They come about | through thp operation of divine law. for, when spiritual under standing tunes ,ne place of false mortal belief; when kindness, compassion and forgiveness re place criticism, animosity and resentment; when the light of love outshines the shadows of fear and hate, and spiritual satis faction and peace replace discon tent and rebellion, then the real nature of man in God’s likeness is revealed in all the beauty and grandeur and harmony with which he was endowed from the beginning by his heavenly Fa ther. Christ Jesus said to Nicoderrius (John 3:7): ‘ Ye must be born again.” In ordet to gain the health, nappiness and harmony which consti'ute the kingdom of heaven, our thinking must ne transformed We must forsake mortal error and material theo ries. and by reversing the testi mony of the physical senses, learn anew what God, Spirit, is. The Nature of God as Love Christian Science assists in this rebirth by defining God in seven synonymous terms, and 1 quote from Science and Health (p 115': "God; Divine Principle Life. Truth, Love. Soul, Spirit. Mind.” Reasoning from the basis that God is the creatoi of the true, spiritual universe, including man, Christian Science deduces that the real man is, in fact God like,—he is God’s expression governed by divine Principle. He is spiritual, altogether lovely, for ever perfect and good. He 'is not, as the naterial senses would claim him to be, material, changeable, discordant, mortal. When we grasp this true un derstanding of man’s being and let it take possession of our thinU-ino urn o m Oui whole outlook and behaviour are changed. Our experience in daily affairs becomes grander, nobler, sweetei We are at peace with ourselves and each other Disorder, disease, discord, dis satisfaction vanish in this spirit ual transformation, and we come into an enjoyment of life never before imagined. This transformation comes gradually as the result of a deep desire to know and do 'he will of God. It comes through prayer. Christian Scientists pray daily in the words of the Lord's Prayer: “Thy kingdom come.'' This prayer acknowledges the pres ence and power of God and ex presses the longing to live in accord with the pattern of true. Godlike being shown in the life of Christ Jesus This involves daily watchful care to eliminate from our thinking all tha is un like God and to ixpress mly the divine qualities implied in the seven names for God which 1 have just quoted. St. John wrote (1 John 4:7): “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of i d; and every one 1 it I- .., r' . r1 dogwood manor Montreat Road BLACK MOUNTAIN, N. C. God’s infinite, all inclusive, compassionate love em 'jr&ces every one of His children We can know that we are all beloved children o! the Father made in His likeness, safe in His tender care, with all nei ’s sup plied What a wonderful truth Then, we are faced with the ■ need to love our neighboui as : ourselves—to see him likewise as God's beloved child, made in His likeness, loving, lovable, eter nally expressing the wisdom, pu rity and perfection of divine Mind Sometimes this does not seem so easy Jesus said (John 15:13): “Greater love hath no iron than this, ihat a man lay down his life for his friends’ Loving involves the giving up of all mortal belief concerning others It demand that w aban don our false sense of life in which oui neighbour appears as a physical, erring, finite human being It calls upon us to exer cise spiritual sense and thus to see him as the perfect man made by God. Christian Scientists pi ay daily to have this love in their hearts They strive to bring it into every aspect of their lives— theii homes, business alTairs and iheii churches—and in proportion to theii success in bearing witness to the presence ' God and His perfect universe are they re warded in seeing the healing in fluence of the Christ manifested around them. The Pattern of True Manhood This healing Christ which the j Bible refers to as “Wonderful” is fully explained in Science and Health. Here “Christ” is shown to be the spiritual expression of God—the divine image and like ness which comes to human thought and dispels the illusions of the senses. It manifests the divine Mind in perfect conscious ness and demonstrates true, sin less being in the expression of the qualities of eternal Life and Love. Jesus expressed the incorpo real, spiritual Christ the divine qualities of his Fathei, God, to such a degree that the fleshly elements derived from his hu man mothei weie entirely in sub jugation to them Humanly he manifested no evil because he was spiritually at one with good His sinless nature, the pure ex pression of the Christ in his every thought and deed, endowed him with divine power. It en abled him to exercise dominion over the errors of matter; to overcome the limitations of time and space, and to cast oul the demons ol sickness ai.d sin which claimed to hold others in bondage By expressing the qualities of God, the Master bore witness to the true nature of man in God's image—the true nature of us all. One of the religious tenets of Christian Science as laid down by Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health reads as follows (p 497) “And we solemnly pu.mise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ ] Jesus; to do unto others as we I would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure" What higher goal could anyone have than to think as Jesus thought and to express the divine nature as he did? This t.nnd “which was also in Christ Jesus” imbues everyone who seeks iu. only with tnercy. justice and purity but with such an all-embracing, impartial, com passionate love for mankind thal it becomes an overwhelming urge to help all who are in need. Christ Jesus yearned to lift the burdens of discord and sickness from the world. In the Bible we read (Matt. 9:36): "When he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shep herd” Every student who in some measure puts the teachings of Christian Science into practice is a practitioner, but there are those who are so “moved with compas sion” that they give up all othei occupations to devote theii full time to the healing work This work is a sacred ministij. The method of healing employed_ Christian Science treatment—is wholly spiritual. Any compro mise with matter, a desire to examine the forms its assumes and the use of material remedies renders its efficacy null and void It is prayer in which thought turns wholly away from matter, the physical body and liscordant mortal conditions, and rests in the consciousness of the presence oi God’s perfect universe, the spirit ual man of His creating and His law of harmony which governs A Healing of Heart Trouble A student of Christian Science was visiting in the home of a sister who was unriei the care of a physician. She was more than 80 years of age but active, vital and full of the enjoyment of liv : ° - . » *«h,ohc wd!) sua denly stricken with a heart con dition a thing which had nevei happened before. Th doctoi attending her sister, in his con cern, insisted upon an examina tion even against her wish His verdict was grave, and he warned her of the need to rest, telling her on no account to rise from her bed. Thanking him for his merest the woman waited for his de parture and immediately took steps to send a message to a Christian Science practitioner re questing metaphysical help. The practitioner at once reached out in prayer to God. According to the orderly procedure laid down in Science and Health under the heading “Mental Treatment Il lustrated, she began by handling teai. Mrs Eddv says (p 411 y hV rnyS be.guln your treatment by allaying the fear of patients.” thfhen 8ratefuily acknowledged the allness of God. good, the izeci mat inert’ fear because 'he divine Mind. This j Christlike understanding 01 true spiritual being she knew to be a law of annihilation to the false j beliefs of human frailty of mor- | tal Imperfection and discord of , every kind, and she claimed the j presence here and now of the evi dence of man s strength and har- i monv in God’s likeness She continued for some Mine with this line of thought, reason ing from perfect cause to perfect ! effect, reversing the testimony ol j the senses and realizing the pres ent perfection .if man. until she felt a wave of jov in the knowl edge of the infinitude of divine ; Love. The tollovving day the patient was out picking flowers when the doctor called to see hei sister. Seriously he begged her at least not to go out of the garden But within a few days, completely healed, she traveled home alone several hundred miles, and there after enjoyed an active life free from trouble vith hei heart. Man's Spiritual Being Appearing The practice of Christian Sci ence does not involve the altera tion of a belief of discor by a mere beliel of harmony. It is the recognition and demonstration of man's true being as described in the first chapter of Genesis where it is recorded that God made man in His image. This man of God's creating is purely spiritual be cause he is the expression of God. Spirit; he is intelligent be cause he is the manifestation of God, divine Mind; he is upright, symmetrical, governed by the law ti harmony because he is the image of God. Principle: he nanifests the unimpaired, spirit ual senses of Soul. His capacity to express he substance of spiritual quali ies is infinite. This is the true nature ol man he spiritual manifestation ol 3od, the only man there really s. This is the truth of each one 3f us, yesteida , today and for ;ver—the true nature which we earn in Christian Science to Haim and to demonstrate. Need foi Spiritual Development Perhaps some may say: “But what about the mortal, material body? How do you reconcile the Biblical record of spiriti al man with the apparent fact that mor tal man exists as a material body? Where did thi come from?” Mrs. Eddy was c mver sant with current theories ot evolution and discusses in hei writings the theories of Darwin But from the heights >1 piritual vision she draws a deal distinc tion between the true, spititual man derived from God, Spirit and the false, mortal belief of man appearing as a material body which begins as an unconscious, microscopic chemical organiza tion and later develop.- into a complicated, articulated, highly sensitive body By this explana tion man is a nortal, evolving through the accumulation and re organization of material atoms, becoming more complicated at each stage of development. But is man primarily dust? 11 so what is th explanation ol ones spiritual nature? How can one have, as he plainly has, the capacity to think, to love, to be happy, to express the qualities ol honesty, joy, patience, serenity and the like? Can dust express 'he qualities derived frort Spirit'’ Why, no. What, then, is this material body? Christian Science shows it to be only a human concept, the subjective state of mortal though! which changes according to the mental eond. tion of the individ jal. Mrs Eddy says in Science and Hec’th (p 199): "Mortals develop their own bodies or make them sick, ac cording as they influence them through mortal mind."
