Golden SAN ANTONIO - - Airman David W. Golden, son of Mr. ,. and Mrs. Harvey A. Golden, :;Swannanoa, N. C., has com pleted basic training at Lack land AFB, Tex. He has been assigned to Chanute AFB, 111., for training in aircraft main tenance. Airman Golden, a 1968 graduate of Charles D. ' Owen High School, attended ..Asheville (N. C.) Buncombe Technical College. Spivey U. S. Air Force Airman First Class Terry L. Spivey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adger M. Spivey, Swannanoa, N. C., has arrived for duty at Wheelus AB, Libya. Airman Spivey, a material specialist, is assigned to a unit of the U. S. Air Forces in Eur ope. He previously served at Lowry AFB, Colo. The airman is a 1965 grad uate of Charles D. Owen High School in Black Mountain, N.C. His wife, the former Margaret J. Long, is the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Ray F. Long, 204 Waynesville, N. C. Reeves VIETNAM - - Marine Private First Class J. A. Reeves, hus band of Mrs. Susan J. Reeves of Old Fort, N. C., served with the First Battalion, Fourth Ma rine Regiment, Third Marine Division in Vietnam, on “Op eration Purple Martin”. The operation has resulted in 319 enemy killed and capture of 4,300 mines, mortar and rocket rounds, plus some 69,000 rounds of small arms ammu nition. Additionally, some sev en and one -half tons of rice and 618 pounds of explosives were taken. As part of the Third Marine Division’s mission, the ba ttalion conducts sweep and clear operations just south of the De militarized Zone. C., was graduated from the Aviation Machinist’s Mate Jet Engine course at the Naval Air Tech nical Training Center in Mem phis, Tenn. TTie eight week curriculum included Jet aircraft engine theory and principles of operation, disassembly and as sembly of jet engines, lubri cation and ignition systems, engine inspections, plane cap tain duties and aircraft start ing procedures. Prior to attending this course he graduated from the two-week indoctrination course in Naval Aviation and the four-week course in Mechanical Funda mentals School. Miguel (26CMO43501) SAN MIGUEL, R. P. (FHTNC) - - Comm j nications Technician Seaman Charles E. McPeters, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Mc Peters of Swannanoa, N. C. and husband of the former Miss Janice L. Watson of Ridge crest, N. C., is serving at the U. S. Naval Communication Sta tion, San Miguel, R. P. The 2,100 acre communica tion station is one of a chain furnishing communication sup port to the U. S. Seventh Fleet operating in Southeast Asian waters. His new duty station is about 24 miles north of Subic Bay on the South China Sea. San Miguel, in zambales province, is a tiny fishing village near the 2,100 acre communication station. Owen All Stars Three Owen players were elected to the Senior Babe Ruth All-Star Team. The boys se lected were: Phil Reese, pit cher; Wessie Rogers, outfield er; and Larry Burleson, third base. The All-Stars will play In the tournament in Asheville this month. Hits team also played two preliminary games to the Ashe ville Tourist games this past week. WNC Sanatorium Honors Employees Years of long service were evident recently at Western North Caro lina Sanatorium in Black Mountain when a picnic was held on the hos pital grounds for certain employees. Ladies were awarded pins and the men received lapel buttons, each with the individual’s number of years service shown. Dr. C. D. Thomas came with the Sanatorium System cm January 1, 1930, an d he has served as Medical Director since 1946. Others rec ognized by name, position, and years of service are: Irvin Page, X-ray Technician, thirty years; Frank Harris, Plant Engineer, thirty years; James Morgan, Laboratory Technician, twenty years; Georgia Dudley, Head Nurse, twenty years; Hayes R. Conner, Assistant Administrator, twenty years; Katherine W. Craig, Nursing Director, twenty years; Maggie Miller, Practical Nurse, twenty years; Vada Mills, Assistant Nursing Director, twenty years; James Moore, Hospital Porter, twenty years. Forty-four (44) employees with fifteen or more years of service were honored also with pins or buttons. They have compiled a record of bet ter than nine hundred and twenty-five (925) years of service to the hos pital. B. M. Leagues On Monday, July 7th, the Dodgers defeated the Braves by a score of 12-3. The Dodgers had twelve runs on four hits and committed one error. The Braves had three runs on four hits and committed four errors. The winning pitcher was Ker ne r Long and the losing pitcher was Phil Reed. Tuesday, July 8 The Cardinals defeated the Cubs by a score of 11-0. Three home runs were scored by the Cards. The boys making the home runs were Ray Weaver, Wayne Carpenter and Rusty Norton. The winning pitcher was Wayne Car penter and the losing pitcher was Doug Clark. Wednesday, July 9 Tlie Giants dropped their first game of the year. The Cardinal won with the score of 6-0. Wayne Carpenter of the Cardinals scored two home runs. The Cardinals had four hits, scored six runs and committed one error. The Giants had no runs, one hit and committed one error. Ray weaver 01 the Cardinals pitched his second no-hit ball game of the year. The winning pitcher was Ray Weaver. Thelosingpitcherwas David Massey. Thursday, July 10 The Braves downed the Cubs with a score of 9-3. The Cubs had three runs, five hits and committed three errors. The Braves made nine runs on five hits and committed one error. The winning pitcher was John Burchfield and the losing pit cher was Doug Clark. Friday, July 11 This was the week that was for the Giants. They had their sec ond loss of the season, losing to the third place Dodgers by a score of seven to six. Porky Spencer of the Giants scored a home run. The Dodgers had seven runs on four hits and committed no errors. The Giants got six runs on five hits and committed four errors. The second game saw B and J Drug Store defeat Broad River twelve to eleven. In the third game only five innings were played but Morgans defeated the Jay cees nineteen to five. On Tuesday, July 8, in the first game Wards downed John son’s seven to one and Broad River won over Northrup two to one. Only three innings were played in this game. A double in the sixth inning by McKenzii was the only extra base hit o the game. July 10 Walks and hit batsmen marred what could have been a fine game between the Braves and the Gi ants. There were 16 walks and 4 hit batsmen. The Braves won 8 to 5. Ledford getting the win. Thirteen base on balls by Cub pitchers was the Key fac tor in the Tigers’ win over the Cubs 9 to 0. K. Patton and M. Patton each had singles for the Cubs. David Cooperpitched the win and Weaver had 2 hits for the Tigers.
