ELIZABETH KEITH SOCIETY EDITOR Mrs. Uva Miracle.Reporter Suzanne Kiioaes. . .Office Manager Woman’s Club Program On November 12th the Woman's Club ot Black Mountain claimed international flavor in three ways: 1) Tasty creations of food from mans countries had complete attention at a 1:00 p.m. luncheon in Friendship Church. 2) Costumes from Pakistan to Africa and Bavaria to Hawaii were real conversation pieces to sa> nothing of the gay Puerto Rican hats sported by die luncheon committee! 3) The program asked us whether the United Nations is worthwhile. Three panel members highlighted some of the success stories often buried beneath the criticism levied at a Security Council's arguments and vetoes which hold the news headlines. The program panel, Mrs. Eugene Gilbert, Miss Opal Stamm and Mrs. Hubert White, was aided by “pop-up" people from the audience. In charge of the luncheon was a committee with Miss Leila Zernow as chairman, assisted by Miss Bessie Zernow, Mrs. Lee Seagle, Mrs. Culver Smith. Mrs. James Jackson and Mrs. Jeter Riddle. They had made the dining room gay with United Nations Hags and fall branches for the enjoyment of all. Tea § Topic The November business and literary meeting of the Tea and UTopic Club was held at the TMonte Vista Hotel with Mrs. fW. W. Phillips, president, as ; hostess. ; The club voted to give gifts ' for the patients at W.N.C. . Sanitorium at Christmas. Mrs. Phillips presented a 1 program on the contributions .of Negroes to the American way of life. She used as her ; source "A Pictorial History of ‘ the Negro in America" by Langston Hughes and Milton * Meltzer. • Mrs. Phillips named many ; Negroes who have been l outstanding in their fields in science. space technology, engineering, invention, letters, and entertainment. Following the program, the hostess served refreshments from a beautifully appointed tea table. Those present were Mrs. W. W. White, Mrs. Richard Oulahan, Mrs. S. S. E VERETT LEE BALL JR. . . . the fanner Miss Penny Deneane Cottrell Wed In Asheuille Miss Penny Deneane Cottrell, daugliter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Dorman Cottrell of 24 Pleasant Ridge Drive. Asheville, became the bride of Everett Lee Ball Jr. of Biltmore Garden Apartments on Saturday, Nov. 15. The Rev. William A. Snyder conducted the 5 p.m. ceremony in Beverly Hills Baptist Church in Asheville. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Everett Lee Ball of Black Mountain, and the late SM. Sgt. Ball. His brother, Gary Ball of Black Mountain, was best man. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a white velvet Empire gown. Her full train of Alencon lace and tulle fell from a Dior bow. Her bridal gown was designed and made by her mother. Miss Joy Anders of Asheville was maid of honor and wore an emerald green velvet gown with Empire waist. She carried a long stemmed pink rose. Miss Fran Silvers, Miss Judy Honeycutt and Mrs. Susan Duckett, all of Asheville; Miss Bobbie Young of Atlanta, Ga„ and Miss Linda Robinson of Raleigh were bridesmaids. They were dressed like the honor attendant. Miss Penny Krantp was flower girl. Her gown was identical to those of the bridesmaids. Craven Kendall of Swannanoa, Alan Taylor and James Blue of Asheville, Woody Sobol and Mack Blizzard of Black Mountain, were ushers. Junior groomsmen were Joe Cottrell, brother of the bride. Bill Honeycutt and Allan Queen, all of Asheville. Assisting at the reception were Mrs. Bob Bartlett, Mrs. John Queen, Mrs. Bill Frisbee, Miss Annette McMahan. Mrs. Bill Anders and Mrs. Colett Dilworth. Mrs. Ball is a graduate of St. Genevieve’s of the Pines School for Secretaries. She is employed by Shuford, Frue and Sluder, Attorneys. Mr. Ball received his bachelor of arts degree in sociology and psychology from the University of Mississippi, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He is personnel manager of Fieldcrest Mills Inc. After a wedding trip to Acapulco. Mexico, the couple will live in Biltmore Garden Apartments. Marcia and Scotty and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Pinyan. Mrs. Shirley Psaltis and children, Dawn and Christopher, recently moved here from Gulf Breeze, Fla. They are residing on View Street, Black Mountain. Mrs. George Gudger has returned to her home after undergoing eye surgery at Memorial Mission Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Kerlee spent several days this week with their son-in-law and daughter. Dr. and Mrs. Robert Headley and children, Robbie, Terry. Kenny and Beth of Winston Salem. Mrs. Billie Hanks Miller is visiting relatives and friends in Columbus, Ohio. Pilots Will Light Tree At Juvenile Ev. Center The Black Mountain Pilot Club is planning to light a large community Christmas tree this year. Contributions are needed, with each dollar given lighting one bulb on the tree. The three will be located on the front lawn of the Juvenile Evaluation Center between Black Mountain and Swannanoa. Boys from the center will place the lights on the tree. Making Christmas happy for children at the Juvenile Evaluation Center is an annual Pilots project. Contributions should be mailed to “Tree Lights”, c/o Snow Carnival This Saturday The annual Snow Carnival Ball will be held Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Asheville City Auditorium beginning at 9:00 pan. The Black Mountain chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi City Council is a co-sponsor, also the Old Fort chapter. The dance is held for the benefit of the Buncombe County Association for the Mentally Retarded. Tickets can be purchased from any member of the chapter near you or at the door Saturday night. McCall was honored on her eighty-fourth birthday with a dinner given at the Lakey Gap Community building. Sunday, Nov. 16 approximately sixty five relatives and friends were present. Mrs. McCall received many lovely and useful gifts. Her six children present were Dorris McCall, Sr., R. V. McCall, Mrs. Jonas Stepp. T. E. McCall. Sr., Mrs. W. T.
