Boys Receive Savings Bonds For Helping A sudden cloud of smoke that might have been a grass fire recently led Mike and Mark Walker, sons of Col and Mrs. Homer L. Walker of Fort Hood, Tex., and grandsons of Mr. and Mrs. John Lockwood of Black Mountain to a rescue mission which netted each a savings bond and a letter of thanks last week. The fire turned out to be at Frank's Marina on Belton Lake. A malfunction of a boat's battery hook-up caused the destruction of several boats in the mishap. Mike and Mark, thinking that they might be of some help to firefighters, had come to the marina from their parents’ lake home as soon as they saw the smoke. Seeing the danger to other boats in the dock, the two boys jumped into the water despite exploding gasoline tanks and pulled the craft to safety. One of the boats they saved was that of Mr. and Mrs. Richard S. Hale of Rt. 1, Belton. In appreciation of the boys’ action, Mr. and Mrs. Hale sent each a savings bond as well as a letter of thanks commending them as “responsible citizens.” * * * The venom of the brown recluse spider is more deadly than that of a rattlesnake’s.
