Porky Spencer relumed to the squad, threw in 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to given Owen much - needed height and rebounding Stan Turner was everywhere on defense and stole the ball eight times Balanced scoring was the secret of Owen's success An injured Preston Walker saw limited action but is expected to be at full strength agamst a much larger Canton Junior High The 9th grade boys team this year is not as big physically as last year's team The redeeming factor is the tremendous speed this year's team has Preston Walker, Ronny Parker. Stan Turner. Keith Thomas and Bruce Abshire, are quick, good ballhandlers and defensive players The Warpomes will have to depend on the press and fast break if they are to have another winning season The Christmas spirit is in the air! Says Wrestling Coach Jim LeVine Team Combines Mixture Of Experience, Youth Buncombe Champions last year but can they do it again...the Owen High School wrestling team’ Coach Jim Levine says ‘How we do as a team this year depends to a large extent on how well our new men come along. We do have some ex perienced men but even though we expect them to win a majority of their matches, they cannot carry the entire team. “This is a list of our team and a brief resume about each boy:” Johnny Wright, 98 pounds, is one of the new men. Should win some matches for us. ‘Danny Mitchell, 119 pounds, junior, has had two years ex perience, is exceptionally strong, should be a winner. ‘Dennis Curtis, 119 pounds, freshman, Dennis' strength will be our back up for Danny and will see as much action as possible in preliminary mat ches. “Charlie Robinson, 126 pounds, senior, probably our most dedicated wrestler, a real tough competitor. We have high hopes for Charlie to be a winner this year. “Mike Shippy, 126 pounds, junior, this is Mike’s first year as a wrestler. He is strong and we plan to use him often. “Terry Owens, 132 pounds, due to health reasons will not wrestle with us this season. He probably knows more moves than any other man we have. We’ll surely miss him. “David Begley, 132 pounds, junior, Dave is probably one of our smoothest wrestlers. This is his third season and we believe he can and will help carry the load. “Marc Ogle, 138 pounds, this weight dass is a little heavy for Marc but we feel he can handle the job. He is one of our smartest wrestlers. “Alan Campos, 138 pounds is back up man for Marc. He is a sophomore and a real strong boy. We expect to use him frequently. “Steve Coston, 145 pounds, we hope to have Steve in shape to wTestle before the end of the season. The loss of Steve is a real blow to the team. Due to an arm injury he will be forced to sit out the first of the season. “Bob Doran, 145 pounds, junior, Bob has two years experience and is a real com petitor. We expect Bob to be one of our leaders. “Gary Adams, 155 pounds, has strength and some ex perience. He should be a winner for us this year. “Wesley Pence, 155 pounds, freshman, is exceptionally strong but doesn't have ex perience. We plan to use him often to help him acquire the needed know-how. “Joe Putnam, 167 pounds, Joe, too, is a very strong boy. He should do well in this weight class. A junior, he has had two years experience. “Joel Lamb, 195 pounds, Joel is a sophomore. He has not had any previous experience but should improve as he learns. “Unlimited class, David Dehart at 315 pounds, has the potential to be a winner. He hasn't had any previous ex perience but should win on strength and weight alone in some matches. If David develops some basic moves, he will certainly be hard to handle. “Mike Searcy, 167 pounds, Mike is a sophomore. He is a strong boy. We are fortunate to have Mike as a back up man for Joe Putnam. “Danny Gregg, 185 pounds, Danny is a junior but hasn’t had any previous experience. He is very quick and strong. When Danny learns some of the basic moves he should be of con siderable value to our team. “David Sartin, 185 pounds, David is a sophomore and saw some action last season in preliminaries. He is strong and aggressive. With more ex perience he could become a real contender. “If our inexperienced men come on as we hope then we should have a winning season. We have some very strong competition in that we wrestle Brevard twice and Tuscola twice. These two schools always are tough competition.
