Susie plans to make a two part harmony recording of her voice with an orchestra and do a dance routine to it for her talent. “Those who describe a beauty pageant as exploitation of women, a meat show, a sex symbol, speak through ignorance, she emphatically stated. “The Jaycee pageant is no exploiter of womankind but is organized by a group of civic minded individuals to help young women develp the poise, talents, beauty and abilities they have. Most important are out standing scholarships to help young women further their education she said. Every girl who enters on the local level is a winner for she receives an education in charm she can use all her life. The Jaycee pageant is aimed to let a woman use her talents, she continued. “Few people realize the hardwork that goes into the pageants by the participants and the sponsors but it is all really worthwhile,” she con cluded. Susie was dressed in a polyester knit of pale blue with a print of navy and white. It featured a large white collar, scoop neckline, and a sash accenting the high waistline, long fitted sleeves. She used navy accessories and wore her “Miss Asheville” crown. During the business session Weber presented letters of appreciation to Police Chief Joe Hemphill and Patrolman Louie Logan on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce. He also an nounced a board meeting to discuss a one time presentation of Pilgrim’s Progress. Maundy Thursday Special Services Set On Thursday of the last week of Jesus Christ’s life, he ate the Passover meal with his disciples. The symbolic re enactment of this Last Supper is known variously as the Lord’s Supper, the Eucharist, Com munion, or Holy Communion. It is considered by many to be the Final Lecture Of Year From Warren Wilson Oline Carmical, Jr. of Warren Wilson’s department of history and political science will deliver the final faculty lecture of 1971 72 on Wednesday night, April 5 at 8 p. m. He will speak on “American Colonial Plans of Union 1695 1760: an Overview.” Carmical joined the faculty at Warren Wilson in 1970. A native of Harlan, Ky., he received his A. B. from Cumberland College and his M. A. from the University of Kentucky. He is the faculty sponsor of the teams wihich represented Warren Wilson recently at the Model United Nations at Harvard University. Lecture To Be Given Monday At Christmount Gordon F. Campbell of Santa Monica, Calif., a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, will deliver a free lecture entitled, “Why Put Up With Fear?” on Monday, April 3, at 8 pm. at Christmount Christian Assembly Guest House, High way 9 South, Black Mountain. First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), located at the corner of Church and Connally Streets in Black Mountain, will conduct a candlelight service com memorating the Last Supper at 7:30 p. m. Ththursday. Acor ding to the minister, the Rev. Robert Parvin, the service is open to all who wish to par ticipate, and visitors are cor dially invited to attend. Communion is an important part of the worship of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and is observed each Sunday as a central part of each congregation’s worship. This special observcance on Maundy Thursday will enable Christians to have a deeper understanding of their Lord’s love for the world. FIND YOUR NEW VOTING PRECINCT. Polling places are as follows: Precinct one, Owen High School; precinct two, the primary school; precinct three, Lake Tomahawk Clubhouse; precinct four, Montreat gatehouse. iiS EXTENSION AWARD—Buncombe County Extension Chairman Riley Palmer accepts a Performance Award from Mrs. Edith McGlamery, president of Epsilon Sigma Phi, the professional fraternaity of extension workers. The Buncombe group was judged to have the most innovative extension program in the 18-county Western Extension District. The staff is responsible for education programs in agriculture, home economics, 4 H and youth, community resource develop ment, and environmental quality, including those at Owen High School. M" :5; i Easter Services Set The Black Mountain Ministerial Association will be in charge of two special ser vices this Easter for Black Mountain churches and others. There will be a Good Friday Service in the First Presbyterin Church on Friday, Mar. 31, at 7:30 p.m. In place of the usual sermon a short drama entitled “The Cross” will be presented by a cast of local people which includes several area minister and youth. The offering taken at this service will be used to help provide emergency funds for transients. Easter morning a Sunrise Service will beheld at the Western N. C. Sanatorium at 5:15 a. m. (not 7 a. m. as reported last week). In case of bad weather the service will be held in the chapel at the Special Service In Swannanoa At At Calvary Church Calvary Free Will Baptist Swannanoa will have a week of special services April 3-9. Services will be at 7 p. m. nightly. Guest minister will be the Rev. Roy Rikard, pastor of Cramerton Freewill Baptist Church and president of Piedmont Bible Institute. The Rev. Frank Cantrell, pastor and his congregation extend a cordial welcome to the public to worship with them. Sanatorium. Everyone is invited to par ticipate. Easter Seal Campaign Ends On April 2 Chairman of the 1972 Appeal of the Blue Ridge Easter Seal Society will be Larry Hinson, golf pro. Mrs. S. S. Cooley of Black Mountain, president of the Board of Directors, said, “We are delighted to have Mr. Hinson lead our efforts to serve handicapped children and adults in the Blue Ridge area.” Easter Seal means wheel chairs, walkers, crutches, braces, orthopedic shoes, two weeks at camp, transportation to medical centers, and the needed information, refferral, and follow-up services for the handicapped. Tlie combined show, to be called the Western North Carolina Horse Show, is scheduled for the Monte Vista Farms show grounds in Black Mountain on July 8-9. McMakins Address Friends Of Library Gems And World Travels Library Program Topic Mr. and Mrs. Wilson McMakin of Black Mountain will show slides of their gem collection and talk of their world-wide travels on Wednesday, April 5 at 10 a.m. in the Education room of the library. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the library. Hostess will be Mrs. Paul Limbert. Coffee will be served before the program. Wilson McMakin was born inCharlotte. His boyhood was spent in Spartanburg County, S. C. and Mecklenburg Cbunty. Upon graduation from high school, he at tended Maryville College in Tennessee. After his marriage, he continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania. As a young man during the Depression, he had a variety of types of work in the Carolinas and Georgia. In Wprld War II he became personnel director for Dravo Shipbuildinging Cor poration in Wilmington, Del. After the war,' he joined International Telephone & Telegraph in New York City. He became a vice president in charge of Labor Relations, and continued in this capacity until his retirement in 1969. Mrs. McMakin (nee Anna Probst) was bom and reared in WalhaUa, S. C. She graduated from Winthrop College with a major in Physics. For four years she taught science and math in Sharon High School in Mecklenburg County. It was here that she met her future husband. Both of the McMakins became interested in geology and mineralogy as a hobby, about 10 years ago. Two rock-hammers and a magnifying-glass are always in their MR. AND MRS. WILSON McMAKIN station wagon, ready for any unusual outcrop along the roadside. McMakin’s work with I.T.T. necessitated much travel in many parts of the world. Os wife went along, on occasions after the children were grown. Their collection naturally includes a variety of specimens from foreign countries. In Black Mountain, McMakin is an active member of the Kiwanis Club and is on the Board of the Swannanoa Valley Medical Center. Mrs. McMakin is a member of the A League. Both are active in the Black Mountain Presbyterian Chlurch. Clean-Up Drive On Dennis St. ' In Swannanoa There will be a clean-up drive on Dennis Street in Swannanoa this Saturday from 9 a. m. to about noon. A truck will be provided. Persons wishing to help should meet at the ball field parking lot with a box or sack to carry trash in. Masons Black Mountain Lodge No. 663 will hold Emergent Com munication at 7:30 p. m. Friday, Mar. 31, to confer the Fellowcraft degree. All Master Masons are invited to attend. Gospel Sing On Saturday Open To All Homer’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church will hold its regular monthly gospel singing on Saturday, April 1 at 7 p.m. An invitation is extended to all singers to come and take part. Riddle An Asheville attorney has been chosen to lead the Pat Taylor for Governor campaign in Buncombe County. Robert E. Riddle, partner in the firm of Riddle and Shackelford, was named to the campaign post by Lindsay Warren, Jr., who is serving as statewide manager. Earns State Honors t Mac Blizard Is NC Jaycee Veep Mac Blizard, president of the Black Mountain-8wwmaaoa Jaycees, was elected a state vice-president of the North CnroHna Jaycee on Sunday, Mar. 26, at the Western Regional Meeting at Skyland Motor Inn in Hendersonville. Blizard has served the local chapter as a director, state director, second vice-president and now president. H earned his SPOKE award three months after joing the club. Since that time he has earned a sparkplug. He has received Freedom Guard Awards the past two years and Speak-up Awards every year. In 1969 Blizard was honored by the local chapter as Co-Key m«n of the year. Others from the Black Mountain-Swannanoa Jaycees attending the meeting were Carl Bartlett, Bruce Bartlett, Tom Blizard, Jerry Burnette, Jack Cole, Ray Glass, Jerry Hartis, Tom Sullivan, Mike Swann and Rick Reed. Joint Sunrise Service To Be Held Sunday Three local Free Will Baptist Churches will hold a joint Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday at 6:30 a. m. at Burgin’s Chapel Free will Baptist Church on Old Toll Road, Black Mountain, the host church. Homer’s Chapel and Swan nanoa 'will join them for the service. Everyone is invited to participate. Specific directions for reaching the church can be had by contacting the Rev. Bake Sole Hie Pilot Club will hold an Easter Bake Sale at Ingle’s Saturday, April 1, beginning at 10 a.m. Aldermen Call Meeting To Discuss Water A Special called Board meeting will be held Thursday, Mar. 30, at 4 p. m. for the purpose of considering joining the Asheville-Buncombe County Metropolitan Consolidated Water District. Chamber Chatter By ED WEBER Executive Secretary, Chamber of Commerce OUR OUTDOOR DRAMA The recent meeting with the producer of “Pilgrim’s Progress” resulted in the possibility of jrsingle, performance in April 1973— the year the show will begin its first national road tour. This performance will enable us to say more definitely, “Yes, this is the drama for us.“ or , “No.” The Chamber’s attention is also focused on the Valley developing and producing its own drama with our two colleges spear heading the project—booked with the outstanding talent in our area. Contact with state agencies and the Institute of Outdoor Drama revealed that other dramas in our state have received assistance as follows: automatic subsidy of up to $10,000 in any year their is a loss of money on ticket sales—another received amounts up to $25,000 at various times. Another received $25,000 for renewing its plant. In addition a great amount of planning and other guidance are available.
