Booster’s Club for a tennis ball
machine. The Henderson and
Haywood County teams
already have such machines
and Enka High School has
ordered one. The machine is
an invaluable practice aid
which eliminates human error
and inconsistency to
“grooving” strokes at a set
speed and spin.
With the loss of team cap
tain Dwight Hussey, Kathy
May, and Doug Clark, the
Warhorses only have three
returning lettermen. John
Daniels, Alan Crawford, and
Jimmy Hensly are the
returning lettermen.
Junior John Daniels is the
younger brother of Jim
Daniels (all conference 1973),
and Patsy Daniels (con
ference champion 1974). He is
the captain of the 1976 team
and is consensus pick to be the
Mountain Athletic Conference
singles overall champion this
year and next. John is a top
college prospect and has
already drawn much attention
from surrounding college
coaches.
Junior Jim Hensly returns
from winning year in singles.
Jim attended summer tennis
camp and is expected to fill
some of the void left by
graduating Seniors.
Allen Crawford, a junior, is
also expected to help more
this year and has shown some
improvement over last
season.
A new player who definitely
shows tremendous promise is
all-around good athlete Mary
Ann Myers, a sophomore, who
is an outstanding basketball
and volleyball player as well..
It looks as if the National
obsession with tennis is
starting to catch on in the
valley, because a number of
outstanding Freshmen have
signed up for tennis this year.
Eric Skidmore, Marty Mc
Clellan, Jodie Owen , Bobby
Wilson,Scott Lowery, Susan
Wheelon, and Matt Ashley are
names to watch. The season
will depend on how well these
Freshmen develop and cope
with competitive pressure.
Roger Denny and George
Foster are returning from last
year’s team also and will add
experience.
This could be Owen’s year
H_WITT
for a conference title. Tuscola,
long-time power, was hurt by
graduation. T.C. Roberson
and Hendersonville could be a
factor depending on new team
members and Brevard is
always a surprise. The whole
season could hingle on the
Warhorses' double play which
will probably be the decisive
factor in most matches as well
as the Conference title. We
can only wait and see.
