Report From
The Office Of Town Manager
The Chief of Police, Crait Slagle, and the Town Manager, at
tended a regular meeting of the Criminal Justice Advisory
Committee on Friday, March 23rd.The Committee acted on a
recommendation from Mayor Slagle and elected Chief Slagle to
serve on the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee.
We would like to welcome Mrs. Lina Munday of Black Moun
tain, to our staff at Town Hall. She has filled a secretarial
position in our Police Department, as a result of the Emergency
Employment Program.
The Town has requested that additional “speed limit” signs
and “children.playing” signs be erected on North Fork Road. The
Department of Transportation has advised us that these signs will
be put on their work list for placement as soon as possible. A large
number of speeding cars due to an insufficient number of signs
has been the cause for great concern to the residents of this area,
especially those families with children. Hopefully these additional
signs and a greater awareness of the hazards will reduce the
speeding problem on North Fork Road.
Mayor Slagle attended the monthly meeting of the Land of the
Sky Regional Council in Asheville last Wednesday, the 21st of
March, where she and the Council discussed, along with other
business, the Black Mountain water problem.
The delay in getting the fence up around the pool is due to the
contractor having previous committments also they are waiting
for footing for new bath house to be poured. The fence’s not being
in place will give more space for workmen.

Alert
From BBB
We have just received a
report of a gypsy-like band
entering Western North
Carolina at Bryson City of
fering home improvement
services. The members of the
band pose as painters,
roofers, driveway pavers, etc.
Rural people and particularly
the elderly, are prime targets
for these people.
Examples of home im
provements that have been
reported are paint that looks
fine until the first rain washes
most of ihe “Paint” off and
roofs patched with burnt oil
rather than tar.
We are sure your readers
will appreciate your alerting
them not to have anything to
do with itinerants of this kind.
You may also wish to advise
your Sheriff’s and Police
Departments to be on the look
out for them.

ESSAY CONTEST WINNERS — Students in the Hiird Grade at the Black
Mountain Primary School recently competed in an Essay Contest “What The;
Flag Means To Me.” The winners were first - Scott Emery of Mrs. Karen"'
Glenn’s Class (Scott's essay was also entered in the City-County contest and he
won second place there.) Second - Roger Inman, Mrs. Davis’ class; third -
Susan Ledbetter and fourth - Erwin Walker both of Mrs. Glenn’s room. The
winners are left to right front row - Scott Emery and Roger Inman; back row -
Susan Ledbetter and Erwin Walker.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS TO ME
The flag to me is a special symbol. It’s a great part
of America. To me our flag stands for freedom,
liberty, justice, brotherhood, and, most of all, love.
The flag shows how people fought for liberty. Also,
the colors of the flag stand for certain things. Red
stands for the blood we shed in battle, white stands
for freedom, and blue for liberty.
The flag is wonderful. That’s why I love our flag.
The thing of freedom, the thing of liberty, the thing
of peace... My Flag!
