Deaths And Funerals BOBBY E. SEARCY Services for Bobby E. Searcy. 38, of 79 Swannanoa Ave., Asheville, who died Saturday June 5, were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church on Pinners Cove Road. The Revs. Ray Woodby, Odell Barnwell and Donald Hare officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Frank, Jerry and Junior Shuffler, Steve Towe, Donald and Harley Searcy, Fred and Charlie Murphy. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was a landscaper for Nansemond Nursery. He was a son of Floyd C. and Maggie Jones Searcy. Surviving in addition to the parents are the widow, Mrs. Dora Murphy Searcy: three sons, Bobby and Kenny Searcy and Jimmy Murphy; two daughters. Misses Gwen and Tongia Searcy, all of the home; a brother, Earl Searcy of Fairview; and five sisters, Mrs. Helen Shuffler and Mrs. Lucille Griffin of Asheville, Mrs Margaret Craig of Black Mountain, Mrs. Maxine Cook of Landis and Mrs. Betty Harris of Arden. The family received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Penland and Sons Funeral Home, Asheville. OSSIE PHILLIPS Ossie L. Phillips, 85, of 103 Barker Ave.. Swannanoa, died Friday, June 4, 1976 in an Asheville hospital after a long illness. A native of Yancey County and a resident of Swannanoa since 1942, he retired in 1963 from the. boiler room of Beacon Manufacturing Co. He had formerly been employed by Holson River Lumber Co. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Alma Mc Mahan and Mrs. Ruby Pruitt of Swannanoa and Mrs. Mildred Allen of Maiden; two sons, Lloyd Phillips with whom he made his home and Charles Phillips of Greenville, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. Ed Howell of Leicester; three brothers, Cash Phillips of Mars Hill, Charles Phillips of Comer Rock, Va., and Sherman Phillips of Green Cove, Va.; 17 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and a great great-grandchild. Services were held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Black Mountain First Free Will Baptist Church which he attended. The Revs. William Vaughn and Frank Cantrell officiated. Burial was in the family cemetery in Pensacola section of Yancey County. Grandsons were pallbearers. Miller Funeral Home, Black Mountain was in charge. BURLESON INFANT Graveside services for Jennifer Leigh Burleson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Larry B. Burleson of Rt. 2 Asheville, who died Friday, June 4, 1976 were held at 4 p.m. Sunday in Skyview Memorial Park. The Rev. Charles Shelton officiated. Surviving in addition to the parents are the maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Graham Meadows of West Asheville; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Burleson of Asheville; the maternal great grandmother, Mrs. W.M. Meadows; and the paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Nell M. Bryson, both of Asheville. Miller Funeral Home, Black Mountain was in charge of arrangements. JACOB CHAMBERS Services for Jacob Cham bers, 81, of 220 Varden Place, Grovemont, who died Saturday, June 5, 1976 were held at 10:30 a m. Tuesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Black Mountain. Thje Rev. Billy Joe Martin officiated. Burial was in Swannanoa Presbyterian Church cemetery. A native of England, he moved to New Bedford, Mass., in 1910 and worked for Beacon Manufacturing Co. in New Bedford in 12919. He tran sferred in 1937 to Swannanoa with Beacon Manufacturing Co., where he retired in 1961. He was a 50-year member of Quittacus Masonic Lodge in New Bedford. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Frances W. Chambers; a daughter, Mrs. Robeart Bagwell of Swannanoa; a son, Robert Y. Chambers of Ard cen; and three grand daughters. The family was at the residence. Ayers, 71, of the Bald Creek Community, died Friday, June 4, in an Asheville hospital after a long illness. A native of Yancey County and a retired carpenter, he was a son of the late John and Easter Austin Ayers. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Linda L. Gillespie and Miss Patricia A. Ayers of the home, Mrs. A.D. Ledford of Barnardsville, Mrs. Ralph Tomberlin of Micaville, Mrs. Bobby Anglin of Hickory and Mrs. Levoid Buckner of Swannanoa; four sons, Danny Ayers of Washington, D.C., Robert and J.C. Ayers of Sterling, Va., and Boyd Ayers of Swannanoa; three sisters, Mrs. John B. Banks and Mrs. Charles Gibbs of Burnsville and Mrs. Russell Harley of Martinez, Ga.; a brother, Luther Ayers of Burnsville; 30 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Burial was in Mc Cracken Cemetery. Pallbearers were Richard Hughes, Hobart Banks, Paul and Leonard Ayers, Brooks and B.H. Higgins. MRS. WILLIAMS EARLY MONTREAT SETTLER, DIES Mrs. Irena Foreman Williams, one of the original settlers of Montreat, died Thursday, June 3,1976 at East Lansing, Mich., according to word received here Monday. Mrs. Williams, 82, wrote • poetry and had been a language and literature tutor at Davidson College, where he husband, the late John Payne Williams, was an economics professor until 1968. They lived in Philadelphia urtil 1951 and retired to Montreat to the home where her parents, the Rev. and Mrs. Kenneth Foreman Sr., had lived when they first came to Montreat in 1904. When her husband died three years ago, Mrs. Williams moved to Michigan to live with her daughter. Survivors include the daughter, Mrs. Norman S. Hayner of East Lansing; two sons, John Foreman Williams of Chicago and Alden Williams of Manhattan, Kan.; a brother, Dr. Kenneth Foreman Jr. of Montreat; and eight grandchildren. A memorial service will be scheduled in Montreat. MRS. BESSIE SMEYA Mrs. Bessie Smeya, 88, of 104 Pine St., Black Mountain, died Thursday, June 3, 1976 unexpectedly at her home. She was bom in Missouri and had lived in Black Mountain for three years. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Lillian Kossmann with whom she made her home; and a son, Robert Smeya of Mount Prospect, 111. Services were held Saturday in Mount Prospect under the direction of Frederick’s Funeral Home. Miller Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements. The Bun combe County Ambulance Service answered eight emergency and 13 routine calls. Two calls were received where service was not needed. The Black Mountain Fire Department Ambulance Service answered one emergency call. Police Department The Black Mountain Police Department made four arrests this past week and conducted 10 investigations. Disturbances included the following: Two intoxicated drivers; two burglar alarms; one prowler; four civil distur bances; and damage to property. Also, one lost child was found and returned to his home. There were four accidents: One at Hiwassee Ave., damage at $75.00; one at Padgettown and U.S. 70, damage at $125.00; one at Montreat Road and Cotton Ave., damage was sustained to both vehicles; one car was totaled and the other had $1500.00 damage with five injured; and one al Doughterty and West State St., damage at $950.00.
