Renewed Interest In Pewter
Is Sparked By Bicentennial
A renewed interest in
pewter has developed in this.
bicentennial year, observes
Charlotte Womble, extension
housing specialist at North
Carolina State University.
“Examples of Early
American pewter are
relatively scarce,” she adds.
“Colonial craftsmen had to
import tin, the basic
ingredient, from England at a
high tariff.
Thus, old pieces were often
remelted and remolded or
traded in for newly-cast items.
“In Colonial days, pewter
was hand cast,” Miss Womble
points out. “This technique is
still used, but has been joined
by spinning and stamping
methods for greater ver
satility.
With hand cast and finished
pewter, each piece may not be
exactly uniform, the specialist
observes. However, this gives
a valued handcrafted look.
Finishes include the dark
shadings of antique, the soft
sheen of satin, or a bright
gleam that resembles silver.
Though not a precious
metal, pewter lends itself to
all the design and use
possibilities of silver, yet
retains its own special beauty
and is tarnish resistant, Miss
Womble says.
Plates, platters, bowls,
;mugs, goblets, pitchers,
sugar and creamer sets, lamp
bases, candleholders, vasesa
and wall sconces are among
the many items that are
available in reproduction of
famous patterns or in modem
designs.
The latest innovation is fine
pewter flatware, usually in
satin finish with stainless steel
knife blades, fork tines, and
spoon bowls. Decorative
pewter figurine; are also
popular.
When purchasing pewter,
it's important to check
manufacturer's labels and
tags for care information,
Miss Womble states. This is
especially true for flatware.
Most pewter flatware is
dishwasher safe, the specialist
adds. Other pieces should be
washed by hand in warm
sudsy water. Rinsing in hot
water and drying immediately
with a soft towel will help
prevent water-spotting.
“It’s wise to wash food and
beverage service pieces
promptly after use,”. Miss
Womble points out. “As with
silver, certain chemicals and
acids present in many foods
may cause stains and pitting if
in long contact with pewter.”
Common culprits include
party dips, eggs, salad
dressing, oils, vinegar, salt
and fruit juices.
RICHARD STEEVES, Shelby, and Kent Campbell of Black Mountain,
congratulate out-going President Owen R. Setzer of Newton, on the job he has
faithfully performed during the past year heading the North Carolina Public
Health Association, Western District. Setzer is Sanitarian Supervisor of the
Catawba County Health Department. Kent Campbell, the newly elected
president, is regional director, D.E.C. program. State Division of Health
Services while Richard Steeves, who will take office next year and will serve
for a one year period ending in June 1978, is the Health Director of Cleveland
County. The 1976 Convention of the Western North Carolina Public Health
Association was held in the new Inn at Fontana Village Resort. Approximately
206 delegates and their wives attended the event, according to R.J. immel,
General Manager of the sprawling vacation complex.
Pewter polish may be used
occasionally to restore
original sheen. Either pewter
or silver polish will renew
bright-finish pewter. Read
and follow directions.
Here’s a caution: Some
pewter and simulated pewter
has a protective finish and
should not be polished. Suds
and water is the easy-care
method for these items.
