Sophomore Scott Abrams will kick many more extra points in the future but it is doubtful that he will kick a more crucial one than the goal spitter he managed with 33 seconds remaining to play to give Hendersonville High a 14 13 Little Mac Division win over Owen on the latter’s field Friday night Abrams’ kick, his second of the night climaxed a 68-yard winning march by the Bearcats in the final two minutes and 29 seconds to play. It was a case of undeniable Ralph Brooks running and passing the Bearcats the distance for the tying TD after he had been intercepted by Kerner Long to set the stage for a go ahead score by Owen in a game that was replete with fireworks. The victory lifted the Hendersonville record to 3-1 while the loss snapped Owen's unbeaten record and left the Warhorses at 3-1. Brooks, workhorse tailback for the Bearcats, got the winning drive going by escaping the clutches of a swarm of Warhorses and scampering 28 yards after fading to pass and finding no receiver open. The play carried from from the Bearcats 32 to Owen 40. After the Cats drew a 15 yard penalty, Brooks passed to Bernard McMinn for 16 yards and David Haynes for 15 and then picked up 17 yards in two carries to the Owen 12. At that stage he threaded the needle on a 12 yard pass to Haynes in the endzone and Abrams made the winning kick. Less than three minutes before that drive started Long G & P TIRE CO. RADIAL TIRE $a/ev 39“ TUNE - UP ea. Plus FET 206 E. State St. 669-8474 intercepted Brooks' pass at the Bearcat 45 and ran 1 to the 19 but Owen drew a clipping penalty back to the 39. I-ong then completed a 37 yard pass to Brad Irvine at the Bearcat two and Randolph Scott plunged twice for the score but the kick for the extra point was blocked and Owen’s lead was 13-7. The Bearcats drove 60 yards in the second period for their first score after Keith Chandler recovered Kemer I/Ong's fumble. Brooks scored from the one. The Warhorses moved 89 yards on two Ixmg to Scott passes for their initial touch down in the third period after a 53 yard punt by Mike Richardson backed them to their nine and a running play netted two.
