Call S69-K4l!fl and (W9-7R55. 7-24 Bones Buried Again Bones of approximately seven persons unearthed in late July by a construction Tew near Andrews Geyser in Old Fort were buried Wed nesday afternoon, Sept. 29, in a single grave near the original gravesites. Life At Highland Farms That soothing clickety-clack of the rail joints lulling us to sleep in a “luxurious” Pullman sleeping car is, for a while at least just a memory of the dim past. Today, at Highland Farms, we still do have a few such punctuating sounds on the TV like the sharp click of a golf stroke, the crack of a batted ball, or the solid punch of a forehand drive on the tennis court; but few, if any of us, can participate in making these sounds. We are largely just spec tators. But clack-clack! What was that? It’s a cool afternoon or evening and it’s most likely a well aimed shot on a shuffle board court - knocking an opponent’s disc out of a scoring lie and into the 10-OFF "kitchen” area which extracts 10 points from his score, while the striking disc stops nearly on the lovely 8 area. Our two courts have been real noisy on recent cool afternoons. We had a good Labor Day Mixed Doubles tournament with 8 couples competing, and won by Bill Overholt, one of our pioneers, and Ruth Zealley, a recent arrival, who, with her husband Hal, lives in new building G. Close on the heels of this struggle, singles tournaments were organized for men and women. The latter was fought out between Ann Morrison, Lee Walmsley, Polly Gammon, Olive Overholt, Kim Bryant, Matsu Crawford, Eleanor Walter, and Annette Shafer. Play-off was by Polly Gammon and Matsu Crawford, with Polly Gammon as the victor. The contestants in the Mens’ Singles were Matt Domstauder, Bill Penfound, Ham Walter, Wolf Rayner, Jerry Gates, Strat Douglas, Orv. Brouer and Bill Overholt. Strat Douglas and Bill Overholt were the finalists, with Bill Overholt being the winner. He felt pretty good for a few days til Carl Hayn returned from a vacation, challenged him, and beat him in two games straight. Bill took it like a good sport, but might be wondering who is champion. It is hoped that the good weather and zeal will last so that another mixed doubles series can be achieved. When we gaze at the new indoor Shuffle Board Room in Building “G”, which will nicely accommodate two courts, we can hardly wait, especially on rainy days, ‘till the floor surface is treated and the new lines are painted on. The partial skeletons are believed to have been those of men and women who helped build the Western North Carolina Railroad in the late 1800’s. The skeletal remains included leg bones, arm bones, three skulls, a pelvis bone, a shoulder blade, teeth, ribs and vertebra. Since it was impossible to match the bones, McDowell County Coroner Walton Clapp assembled the remains side by side in the grave. One skull had an almost completel set of teeth with only one cavity. Employes of Taylor-Murphy Construction Company of Asheville covered the grave with large rocks until Southern Railway places a permanent marker at the head of the grave. Clapp said the bodies had originally been buried close to the top of the ground allowing roots to grow inside the skull cavity. He said the state’s Chief Medical Examiner, Page Hudson, examined them as belonging to black and white males and black females. He said Hudson determined their sex and race by bone structure. The bones were uncovered by employes of Taylor Murphy Construction Com pany as they graded dirt on a mountain side across from Andrews Geyser to be used to reinforce the railroad banks. The bones are believed to have been those of prison laborers who helped construct the Western North Carolina Railroad from 1875-79. History of the construction of the railroad indicates that except for skilled labor, all work was done by prisoners. Seventy-two prisoners are believed to have died during the time. The bones were found about 60 feet from the railroad track. CRAIGMONT ROAD - Nice new modern log cabin on large lot. $22,000. Also 2 lots adjoining cabin can be purchased.
