Beacon Manufacturing Co., Inc Swannanoa XYZ Club News VISIT TO THE MEETING PLACE City Manager Jon Creighton and several staff members of the XYZ Club headed by Irene Stephenson spent a recent Tuesday at the Meeting Place in Tryon which is a particularly successful Senior Citizen Center established about two years ago. The Meeting which serves Polk and Rutherfordton County citizens is supported by the Rutherford-Polk Mental Health Program and the Polk County Commission on Aging. The Center is located in the old St. Luk'>Hospital on the edge of Tryon, and has a sunny, flower filled suite of rooms on the ground floor. The Center has a membership of 446 and serves 4870 meals a year. It has a full time staff of two, three part time aides and 127 volunteers. The Director, Mrs. Ditte Widdicombe is a charming, vivacious and particularly sensitive woman who through talent and a genuine interest has created an unquestionably sympathetic Center for older citizens. The Center has an elaborate program including among other features, card and pool rooms, shuffle board, a book and record library, chess, singing, crafts, workshops on quilting, painting, gourmet cooking, slide talks and bus trips. The Meeting Place run, in fact own, two vans which brings members to the club and like most Centers serves a hot meal every day, in this instance cooked by a prize winning chef. The Meeting Place is also unique in having two small stores on the premises which help meet the Club’s operating expenses. The shops ar e known as | the Peppermint Pantry which seils home baked goods, and the Peppermint Shop which sells handicrafts made by members and others, 75 percent of the selling price going to the maker of the goods. It was stimulating to see this very successful Center. Our staff hopes to introduce some parts of the Meeting Place’s outstanding program. Shiloh located in Biltmore is about two years old and servesan average of twentv-, five older citizens every day. It has an extensive program of activities including crafts, ceramics, quilting, and games. The holiday turkey was served in an elaborately decorated room at long tables dressed with checkered cloths and holly.
