Unemployment In Area Dropping
Unemployment in Bun
combe and Madison counties
is declining, and the area work
fcce is shrinking as “hard
times” ease, according to a
state statistical report on the
'wc-county Asheville Stan
dard Metropolitan Statistical
Area (SMSA).
Unemployment dropped
from 8.4 per cent in October.
1975, (o 4.9 per cent in October,
1976, according to the report.
There were 6,500 unem
ployed oersons locking for
work in October, 1975, and
only 3,700 in October, 1976, a
drop ot 2,800 persons, ac
cording to the statistics.
But employment has risen
i-y only 400 persons, from
70,900 in 1975 tu 71,300 in Oc
tober. 1976, the report states.
And the SMSA work force

77,400 in 1975 to 75,000 in Oc
tober, 1976, the report says.
The labor force is the
number of people in an area
who are employed or looking
for work, according to state
labor analyst Lee Ausley.
“I-ast year was a hard time.
Many people who don't nor
mally work or look for work
were out looking. Now they
aren’t,” Ausley said.

example, looked for work as
their husband’s hours were
cut. Many of those women
have gone back to full-time
homemaking as their
husbands' pay checks im
proved this year, Ausley said.
Another example, he said, is
students who left school to
work and help their families,
and are now back in school.
“You don’t count people who
are not looking for work in
your labor force figures,” he
said.
The report also said that the
Asheville SMSA unem
ployment rate of 4.9 per cent
compares favorably with the
state rate of 6.1 per cent and
the national adjusted rate of
7.2 per cent.
The report also states that
there are 19,200 persons
employed in the manufac
turing of durable goods, 11,500
in the manufacturing of non
durable goods and 42,100 in
non-manufacturing jobs that
include real estate, con
struction, finance, insurance,
utilities, trade, and govern
ment.
Government payrolls have
shown the largest recent in
crease in employes among
area employers with 300 more
employes in October, 1976,
than September, 1976.
The average manufacturing
employe’s wage was $3.78 an
hour in October, two cents
more than it was in September
and 24 cents more per hour
than it was in January, 1976,
according to the report.

If You Drink and Drive New Year’s Eve
iU. I
It s no accident that the highest percentage
of road tragedies occur during the holidays.
It's a fact. It's also a fact that drinking and
driving can be a deadly combination. Why
chance becoming another statistic on New
Year’s eve? Take a look at the facts. Think
twice before you have that second drink.
And have a safe, happy New Year.
