Moments after the goal which put Warren Wilson into national soccer nking, the elated Owls flew high. Halfback Joe Perreira scored for Warren ilson w ith 15 minutes to go in the game. Erskine held a 1-0 lead from the first If Played to a tie. the “Game of the Week’of the National Intercollegiate ccer Association, went through two 10-minute overtime periods without a tision. < Hob Lindsey) WWC soccer 9th in South When the National In tercollegiate Soccer Association rankings for the South was released Tuesday, Warren Wilson College was 9th on the list of the “Ten Top Teams’in the South. The national ranking is the first gained by the Owls in its soccer history. It came following a 1-1 tie, with then 7th ranked Erskine College at home on Saturday,, in the Intercollegiate Soccer Association “Game of the Week.' The game was the .’■econd double overtime the Owls played last week and brings their unbeaten record to 4-0-1. Last weeks play was one which pushed Coach Hank SteinbrecherS never-say-die squad to its physical limits. On Monday at Central Wesleyan, they pulled out a 2-1 cliff hanger in double over time. Central, back with a veteran team, are defending NIAA District 6 champions. On Wednesday, the Owls traveled to Spartanburg to turn back the Wofford Terriers 3-0. Close on the heels of their test against Wesleyan, the Owls were slow to untrack. But at mid-point in the half, quick goals by Jorge Duran, David Taylor and Randy Libby, on assist passes by Roland Piava, put the game away. But the Saturday game was the big one. Traditionally Erskine has been winning District 6 championships as though they owned the NIAA title. And with the “Game of the Week’in the South focused on the Swannanoa Valley, a win or tie for the Owls would move them into the top ten. As it was they emerged with the elation that in the past had come only with important victories. Erskine drew first blood toward the close of the first half. Forward Casey Campbell put the ball in the goal with a head shot from a ricochet off the goal bar. For the opening minutes of the second half, the highly skilled Flying Fleet con centrated the play at the Owli end of the field. The tide turned when Warren Wilson halfback Joe Perreira used an injured left foot to fire the tying goal with 15 minutes left in the game. From this point on and through 20 minutes of over time, Warren Wilson dominated play but could not bring shots that missed by inches into the net. Coach Steinbrecher would not single out any one of his players tor exceptional play. “They all gave to their full potential. Without question this is the best team I have ever coached. Owl defensive back Charlie Kimball was named the games outstanding player by the coaches and the referees. The result is that Kimball is also the Defensive Back of the Week’ in the South. Owl goalie Eric Vaughtert play deserved equal recognition. Both coaches felt that there is a good possibility that Erskine and Warren Wilson will meet again in the area playoffs as winners of District 6 and NIAA District 26. Steinbrecher: “The team feels we can do it. I believe we can.’ The Owls double-overtime victory over Central Weslevan showed considerable Warren Wilson metal. Central scored first. A goal by Jeff LaCourse on an assist from Jorge Duran evened it. Then with two minutes to play in the double overtime, back Joe Eck drilled home the winner.
