JVs undefeated
after Mitchell romp
by Bill Mott
The undefeated Owen
Warponies played their final
game of the season in a
frizzling rain at Owen' s
Shuford field, Thursday Oc
tober 28.
; Mitchell received the kick
off but failed to score after two
first down situations. They
punted to Owen and with 3:59
left in the first quarter, Tim
Wilson swept left end for a 72
yard romp. Keith Duncan
kicked the extra point and
Owen led by a score of 7 to 0.
West again played ball control
but were forced to punt two
minutes into the second
quarter. Tim Wilson took the
first play from scrimmage for
a 30-yard score and again
Keith Duncan powered his
way for 33 yards on three
carries and scored both the
touchdown and the two point
conversion.*
Barely into the third
quarter, Mitchell struck with
a long pass. The kick-off went
over Wilson’s head but he
quickly picked up the ball and
ran. untouched, 95 yards. For
Owen’s third and last touch
down Keith Duncan bulled his
way for two more points.
The rain was becoming
harder and both teams
stuggled just to handle the ball
at all on the muddy field.
Final score-Owen 30, Mitchell
0.
The Freshmen team was

rally Friday, honoring their
undefeated season and Con
ference Championship.
Record good for JVs
by Dan Ward
The 7-0 Owen Warponies are
not only conference Junior
Varsity champs, but they
finished the season with flair.
While scoring an average of
28 points per game, the fresh
men held their opponents to a
mere 5.7 points - an im
pressive record for defense as
well as offense.
Statistically speaking, Tim
Wilson stands out as a prime
prospect for next year’s
varsity. Wilson not only
wrapped up the most yardage
and points of the JV backs, but
he sacked the most opponents
- an average of 11.88 per game.
Keith Duncan also stands
out. Averaging a whopping
12.98 yards per carry, Duncan
personified the rushing ex
cellence of the Warponies, a
team that scored only two
touchdowns on passes, both by
Wayne Padgett.
Second only to Wilson, Greg
Buckner was the tacL ingest
Warpony on this year’s squad
with an average of 6.33
unassisted tackles per game.
He was followed by Duncan,
5.3; and Ricky Barlett, 4.0.

Owls to p/av Guilford
Top seeded Warren Wislon
College will meet Guilford
College Thursday at 3 p.m. in
the opening round of the
NAIA District 26 playoffs. The
district and North Carolina
champion will be decided
Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on the
Warren Wilson field.
In view of the fact that the
second and third ranked
teams, High Point and
Pfeiffer College are both from
the High Point area, Warren
Wilson passed on its
perogative to host that game.
It will be played 'niursday at
High Point
Although Warren Wilson
carries a 232 point rating,
compared to 196 for High
Point and 189 and 183 for
Pheiffer and Guilford, Coach
Hank Steinbrecher is guarded
about the Owls’chances.
“We are going to have to stay
healthy. We don’t have the
reserve strength we had at the
beginning of the season. In
juries can knock us out of it.’
To make the most of his
limited manpower, Stein
brecher has installed a
defensive formation in recent
practice sessions that will

have nine of the 11-man team
playing defense as soon as the
ball turns over.
“The word is out. Warren
Wilson is short. You can score
on them with head shots. So,
we’ re going to have to mass
our defense, and the team that
will make the fewest mistakes
on defense is the team to go on
to meet the South Carolina,
Georgia and Alabama
winners in the Southeastern
finals.’
Recent heavy rains have
kept the Owls away from the
soccer field. However,
Steinbrecher feels it will be in
good shape by Thursday.
“We are going to have it
rolled on Wednesday to put it
w
in top condition. They’ll pray
there is no more rain until
after Saturday.'
When Steinbrecher speaks
of the importance of defense in
playoff play, he is speaking
from experience. The Owls
carried away the District 6
title in 1975 with a team whose
forte was strong defensive
play. He sees no soft spot in
the four finalists.
"They are all strong. With
15 North Carolina NAIA
colleges, you don’t get this far
without being good.'
At playoff time Warren
Wilson is 7-3-2, Pheiffer is 12-3
High Point is 9-5 and Guilford
is 10-5-2.
