Now I know: no interruptions." Smit got his chance for a respite Then he became BMC's composer-in-residence for 1S30. Under the auspices of the Center and Mu Phi Epsilon Music Fraternity, he is free to work whip- on his music all day, coming out of hiding only for a lec ture every two weeks or for an occasional concert. The long, summery days at Brevard afford Smit another luxury: reflection. He jokes about his father, a Russian violinist, in troducing him to the piano right out of diapers. "I think he did it just to have an accompanist in the house for free." His interest in people is reflected in a lecture he plans for July 16. Entitled "A Musical Beheading," it explores the nature of Beethoven's feeling about Mozart, whoonce judged Beethoven in an audition.
