Permanent collection Gallery
opened ' Tuesday at Muesum
For the first time, the
Asheville Art Museum is
featuring permanent
exhibition space for the
Museum's own collection.
The new gallery, designed by
Director Edwin Ritts, was
constructed within the
facility in the lower level of
the Civic Center, in
corporating the relocation
and resurfacing of wall
panels in the area adjacent
to the classroom.
The addition provides
seventy running feet of wall
space and an area of ap
proximately 360 square feet
allowing for a mid-sized
exhibition of wall and floor
pieces. Selected works will
be displayed on a rotating
schedule designed to exhibit
the entire collection during
the coming year.
"A permanent collection is
the backbone of any museum
institution," said Mr. Ritts,.
"and ours offers a sur
prisingly diverse group of
objects." The collection is
concentrated primarily on
20th Century American art,
with a particular emphasis
on regional contemporary
artists.
Several pieces have been
added to the collection in
recent years through funds
provided for this purpose by
the National Endowment for
the Arts grants received by
the museum, and matched
with funding obtained from
private independent sources.
Works have been selected
from regional competitions
highlighting the Museum's
annual schedule, as well as
artists featured in individual
exhibition. Application will
again be made for additional
grants to participate in this
supportive program.
Officially opened on
Tuesday, September 9, Mr.
Ritts chose twelve pieces,
including paintings and
sculpture, featuring works
by Tucker Cooke, Elliot
Dangerfield, Dick Mandell,
and others. This show will
remain on display until
January, when the gallery
will feature an exhibition of
graphic arts from the
collection.

up to Blue Ridge Assembly.

Church Breaks Ground
This past Sunday, the
congregation of Valley
Assembly moved outside for
a ground breaking
ceremony, with plans to start
construction on a new church
building immediately.
Pastor Harold Aday and his
family moved here from
Kansas City three years ago
to begin the church, which
was sponsored as a mission
by West Asheville Assembly
of God.
The congregation
presently meets in a sanc
tuary in the house on the
church property. Plans for
the new sanctuary were
drawn by Architect Gordon
Peebles of Fayetteville, N.C.
The auditorium will seat
about 250 people and one
floor will be designated for
educational purposes.
