The Inter national News Service announces Jack Veiock, of Indianapolis, - will become its sporting; editor Monday, Novem ber 27, succeeding Frank G. Menke, whose resignation was recently ac cepted. Mr. Veiock is well known through out the country for his articles on baseball, boxing and other sports. The Middle West is especially famil iar with his comment on football. He will write the International News Service daily sport feature ar ticle, besides sport paragraphs and humorous verses on sport topics. In short, he 'expects to combine the fea ture idea with the sport "colyum." He will also cover as many large sporting events in person possible. In addition to Mr. Veiock, the In ternational News Service is making plans to strengthen its sporting ser vice by employing expert . sport writers in several sections . of the country. .. .The NEW BERNIAN will have the rights for Mr. Veiock's articles in New Bern. Occupants Escaped Uninjured But Top of Machine is Wrecked. Sheriff R. B. Lane, Deputy Sheriff T. H. Smith and Mr. W. E. Perry had a narrow escape from serious injury late Friday afternoon when one. of the Norfolk Southern yard engines crashed into an automobile in which the party was riding. Except badly damaging the top there was little damage to the automobile and all the occupants escaped with out injury. Sheriff Lane had been in the north western part of the city to serve a claim and delivery paper and tjie party were returning when the acci dent occurred. They were crossing B street. On either side, were box cars which obstructed the view of the engine which was running light and making little or no noise. The mo torist and the engineer were both ig norant of the presence of the other until it was too late to avoid the ac cident. The railroad company compromised the matter by having the broken top replaced with a new one. E Captain Bryan Nabs Youths In v Act or uuung uui . ine ' . Firemen. , :; During the past few weeks the fire men have been put to a great deal of trouble on account of false alarms of fire being turned in from boxes situated in the western and north western parts of the city." -.Efforts by both the firemen and policemen have been made to learn the identity of the person or persons .thus violating the law, but. they were unsuccessful until yesterday when Captain A. L. Bryan hauled in his net and, found in it, Eddie Harris and Tim Sikes, two colored. ioys who appear to be about eight or nine years of age.. It has been the "custom" of some one to call out the 'fire trucks either Saturday afternoon or night for sev eral weeks. Captaiii Bryan had his plans made for them yesterday after noon, and he went to the vicinity of Main and Murray streets with the in tention of remaining until he learned who the violators were. ' Be' did not wait long before the .boys' appeared on the scene and sent in an alarm. It was; the officer's intention to place the boys in jail, but as they were so small they were4, released and their parents recognized - to have them at the city hall Monday morn ing at eleven o'clock. Tommy Draak, the Belgian whirl wind, who is to meet Hans Fuerst, the Austrian champion, writes from Ho boken, N. J., where he has been wrest ling, that the bout on next Thursday night will be the hardest battle he has yet faced in this city. Fuerst is acknowledged to be one of the gamest and toughest proposi tions to down in the country, and his record in the tournament held in De troit, Mich., a few weeks ago was wherein, he won 19 matches out of twenty-four stamps him of being a grappler of real ability. As this match comes on the night of a holiday when everybody will be pleasure bent, no doubt one of the largest crowds of the season will be on hand when the principals get to gether. Two good preliminaries will start the ball rolling at 8:15, promptly; andJ the' big event at 9 O'clock sharp. Ringside tickets can now be reserv ed and purchased at the emporium of Edward Clark, in the Elks Temple. FRENCH DRESSING FOR SALAD It's Hie simplest. And it is the best. Have it on the lettuce. It is delicious after the meat course. The bowl and ingredients should be very .cold.' The following portions are for two or three people. First, put three tablespoonsful of olive oil into, the cold bowl. Add nearly a teaspoonf ul of salt and a saltspoonfnl of pepper. With a wooden spoon stir until the salt has entirely dissolved- ' jv. Then add a tablespoonful of vinegar drop by drop, stirring all the time. Presently it-.will become white and a little thicker pour it, over the leaves which have been washed and wiped dry. , ECCLESIASTICAL DUES EN-f,, FORCED. . (. ' The following from the Wilmington Star of the 25th will be of interest here as Ress is to be seen in action here during the next few -weeks: John Cilonis, of Norfolk, and Lud- wig Ress, of New York, met at Wool vin hall last night in one of the fast est, hardest fought and. most excit ing wrestling-matches seen here in several Seasons, Kilonis winning in two straight falls, the first in 27 minutes and the second in 42 The Greek used the flying mare to secure both of his falls, this apparently be ing the only hold from which the blond Belgian could not escape. Both men are in the light' heavy weight class, and for this class their work was easily as fast as ever seen on a local mat. Not only fast, but spectacular practically throughout the duration of the match. They were almost evenly matched in weight, strength and skill, so far as the eye could tell, but when it came to speed Kilonis, perhaps had a shade the bet ter of it over his blond opponent ..In the mild mannered Belgian boy, how ever, he caught a tartar when he started his usual rough tactics, and literally drove his swart adversity out of the ring. Kilonis, after the first ten minutes of the first fall, and after some samples of his kind of "turn' the other cheek" tactics dispen sea Dy tne Belgian, lougnt a wary fight, saving himself all that he could and never taking a chance. On the other hand Ress frequently took chances that perhaps it might have Deen Bet to avoid, and it may have been due to this fact that he felt into the deadly trap of the flying mare each time. The match was refereed by Jimmy Wade, and was witnessed by quite a large gathering of enthusiastic mat fans. ' MERELY INCIDENTAL. An aged negro was crossing tender at a spot where an express train made quick work of a buggy and its occupants. Naturally he was the chief witness and the entire case hing ed upon the energy with which he had displayed his warning signal. . A gruelling cross-examination left Rastus unshaken in this story The night was dark, and he had waved his lantern' frantically, but the 'driver of the carriage paid na attention to it. Later, the division superintendent called the flagman to bis office to com pliment him on the stedfastness with which he stuck to his story. - , -. "You did wonderfully, Rastus," he said., "1-was afraid at first you might waver an your testimony." ,-' f ... "Nosirr nossir," Rastus exclaimed, "but I done feared ev-ry minute that 'ere durn lawyer was gwine ter ask me if mah lantern was lit'i Puck.
