On "Monday night, January 6tb, in the quiet little town of Waco a marriage was solemnized in which two popular Shelby people were the contracting parties, ; It was arran ged to be a secret marriage, and the principals never intended that their marriage should be made publio until six months or a year had elapsed. However when they returned to Shelby there , was a suspicion that they had -married and it was only ' a few days until everybody -watted to knowVhether or not it was so. On Monday?af ter noon the charming bride, who was formerly Mu Docia Pruett, called at Tax SxAB.omce and "owned up' her marriage to Prof. Thos. Plonkr the well known president of Cleve land Commercial College, and The Star was thus the first to get this interesting uewa direct. yj- The marriage occurred in this way : Miss Fraett was visiting uer good . friend. Mrs.' Josh Miller, in Waco. and Prof. Plonk got the marriage license and wont to Waco last Monday night and they decid ed to marry quietly and "keep the secret well.' R. Humphries, of No. 1 township, is one of the largest land owners in the oouuty. He has 1800 acrs of land in all, about (1000 acres, being in Cleveland county, and 800 acres in boutn Carolina Mr. Humphries is never without tenants on all his places, and generally has good ones. As a rule they stay with him a long time. He has one ten ant who has been with him since 1873. Mr. J. J. McCraw. During these 29 years he has been at the rame place, and is now renting out his own farm. Mr. Humphries and his renters always get along nicely and he gives tnem a gooa chance to make something for themselves, and in turn they ren der him good servico. Death at Jin Uobbini. Mrs. Lucinda Dobbins, agod 81 years, died on Tuesday of last week at the home of her daughter in Henrietta and was brought to Cleveland county for burial last Wednesday. The interment took place in the old Hawkins family burying ground on Sandy Run, Rey. A. C. Irvin conducting the funeral service and speaking words of comfort and consolation to the bereaved ones. She left 6 Children, about 30 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She was a member of the Baptist church, a good woman and a con sistent Christian She is sweetly resting under the shade of the trees in the green hills of (iod. Lino sl Saiorar. The Oliver Smith land in No 5 township was Bold by Commission J. H. Quinn Saturday. There are 59 1 acres, including the dower tract, and it brcught 5U3, and was purchased by E. Y. Webb, Esq. The fine old Homestead farm ol the late Thos. M. Dixon, on Buf falo, was sold at the same time by Commissioner F. M. Dixon, and van tmrchased bv Mr. H. P. Dick son for 22735. ine tract contains 191 acres, 40 acres of which is fine hnttom land. This property was sold once before, but the bid was raised. Sherrill's pastorate in Shelby and worshipping with the Methodist congregation was duly appreciated, and on last Sunday night Pastor Sherrill and his con gregation worshipped with the Presbyterian congregation, and they will visit the Baptist church in a body on one Sunday night of next month, thus evidencing the appreciation of the courtesy ex tended. The gross amount of money including-school building and other expense money, added to the above amount makes a total of $15,194.10. ; :r ' The JBoard has arranged to pay a little better salary for teachers at some places, where it was thought the bes interest of the school demanded an increase. After this apportionment is made, application will be made to the State to get a suf - fient amount from the second $100000 appropriated to the public schools to enable all the schools to run four months, or as nearly that ength of time as possible. He was a model man and Christian and lived his religion in his every - day life. ; - He ; always attended church when he was able to go and was usually found in his place. He was a gallant Confederate soldier and leaves a large family of sons ; and daughters, who, are, among the best people in our good county. The funeral sevices were conducted by Revs. T. Dixon and A. C Irvin and a large concourse of. people witnessed the 'last sad ; rites over the body of the deceased. The sorrowing ones have our sympathy. t Ofur sapper nr RiKat. The old veterans of Shelby will give ; : an oyster supper next Monday night compli mjentary to the Cleveland Cnapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, and a few other invited guests. The supper will be served in the old Love building store-room, now owned by Solicitor Webb. Capt. J. H. Wells, the prime mover in this graceful com pliment to our patriotic ladies, makes the . following an nouncement of toasts and the speakers: , The Confederate Soldier Dr. W. F. Mitchell. Robt. E. Lee E. Y. Webb. The Women of the Confed eracy Robt. L. Ryburn. Stonewall Jackson Clydei R. Hoey. These will be five-minute speeches, and there may be other responses, (ren. Bee's birthday occurs on Sunday, but this observance of it wil be on Monday night. A Delift-ailal mimcale. ' Miss Beulah Witherspoon's well trained and talented music class gave a delightful musical recital at Mrs. J. K. Dovers last Jmday evening and a large crowd was pres ent. The bright young stu dents acquitted themselves most handsomely and reflect ed, much credit upon their gifted and painstaking teach er. The elegantly furnished and brilliantly illuminated parlor and hall were filled with chairs occupied, by eager listeners. In addition to the musical program by the class there were recitations by Misses Ruth Ebeltoft and Laura Burton Miller, and a solo by Miss Madge Webb. The evening was most delight fully spent. sevan care 01 Convicts. A special train came up on the Seaboard Air Line from Raleigh Tuesday and trans, f erred to the S. C. & G. E. Railroad in Shelby and from here on to Marion, bearing 250 convicts from the State prison to the O. R. & C. road which is building front a point in Tennessee. The train had seven cars. At Marion the convicts were unloaded and they had to walk 40 miles across the country to the rail road work. Mr. J. E. Duval is put ting in ah electric light plant at the knitting miu in lilacKs burg, S. 0M this -week, and will also put in a plant for the town. He is a, capable and energetic electrician.
