Again Shelby has gone up against a good ball team and again she has carried away the victory. At Gastonia Wednes day our crack aggregation of players defeated the team at that place to the score of 6 to 1, and Tnursday's game come our way to the tune of ! to 6. Edwards did the pitching the first day and Williams the second. Behind the bat both times was the inim itable James, whose playing is always of the highest order. Ed wards pitched a superb game, not allowing but our hits and not one (.f these till the 7th in mg. The team backed him up from start to finish, making but two errors in the game. On the second day Williams was riiht there with the goods and held the locals down to a very few hits and getting himself out of holes eveal times in quick and commendable style. At one time there were three men on bases and nobody out, when Williams got on his pitching clothes and struck out two men in succession and allowed another a little pep fly which was gracefully taken m by a fielder. The whole team played fine ball and eacn mem ber has the gratitude and con gratulation of Shelby. Mention should be made of the fact that Mr. Jap Suttle's tern porary management of the team on this trip showed that he knows how to conduct the financial affairs of a base ball team as well as he knows how to collect taxes and handle real estate; and that the treatment of our boys by the Gastonia team and citizens was all that could be asked in ihe way of courtesy and hospitality. We committed to its mother earth, in the hope of a joyful re surrection at the last day, the body of one who was as pure, as lovely, as saintly a character as I have ever known. The noblest tribute that could be paid to her memory would be but a plain un varnished account or hsr daily walk and conversation before God and man so quiet, so pa tient, so unselfish, so humble, so Christ like. I believe no church can fur nish a nobler example of true Christian woman hood than our departed friend. Faithful in all the relations of life, faithful m little, faithful in much, faithful in all things. Our prayer west up to the throne of grace for her restora tion to health and strength but it pleased God to take her from us. Washington Ftnt. The mission of the Republican party at the South is to hold of fice Federal office. In Ken tucky it is to watch a still house. In Louisiana it is to get a job in the custom house. In Mississip pi it is to oe a postmaster. In Virginia it is to be billeted on the navy yard. The "lily whites" in all the Southern States are viol ently opposed to conferring of fice on the man and brother. They say it is "impolitic." They think it is disreputable. In their philosophy it is the right of the Southern white Republican to be appointed to office, aid it is the duty of the Southern black Re publican to vote tha ticket. Jury List for Summer Term.
