WEATHERS, President. - Entered at second class matter Janu ary 1, 1905, at the postoffice at Shelby, North Carolina, under the Act of Con ress March 3, 1879. FRIDAY, MAY 19. 1911. (GEORGE S. MERRIAM) A little thought will show you how vastly your own happiness de pends upon the way oth er people bear themselves toward you. Turn the idea around, and remem ber that just so much are adding to the pleasure or the misery of other peo ple's days. STANDARD OIL CASE The opinion of the U. S. Su preme Court dissolving the Standard Oil Trust and its 1 subsidiary corporations shows that the people are still supreme and that the courts are still the guardian of the rights of all the people, probably never before has this high tribunal handed down such an important decis ion, but for some reason trade circles expected it and there was surprisingly little flurry in the markets of the world. The court says the Standard Oi Company was a monopoly in . restraint of trade and therefore , , ..ordered it dissolved within six months. The great trust has made it clear that it will obey the decree but as yet has not announced its plans of re-organ ization. Frank B. Kellog who took al me lesumony m tne case on behalf of the Government said that the Standard Oil organiza tionwas not a natural growth 1 A 1 . . out was corn ana reared in fraud and oppression, and "hangs over the commerce of this country today like a threaten ing cloud." ine standard Oil Company of New Jersey, he told the - court, controlled from 85 to 97 per cent of the oil business of the country, with a financial power beyond that possessed by any other combination ever known. The combination, he added, was "made effective and powerful by reason of prefer ential rates and rebates in trans porxaiion, me greatest ever known to have been made and by unfair and brutal methods of competition, which in and of themselves between merchants and corner grocerymen would not be dangerous, but in the hands of a combination of this . size and of this power, are the most dangerous instruments to independent dealers.?manufact urers and men engaging in en terprise known in commerce. There are various tones of comment on the opinion. Presi dent Taf t is disappointed, there is much gratification in admin istration circles around Wash ington and some misgiving, while many Democratic sena tors and representatives ex pressed their disappointments as to the "rule of reason" fea ture of the decision. Senator Culbertson goes so far as to say that it is a greater victory for ' the trusts than for the people. WHY TO COLLEGE? High School graduates, you have received your diplomas in Piedmont, Boiling Springs and Shelby, now go to college.. You ask why to college? President Louis Edward Horden of the University of Wooster. O., names six things which young people receive in exchange fo r their years spent in study. (1) Education increases the; earning power of the individual (2) American youth are ambi tious to achieve success in life (3) Youth recognizes that college associations willjbe of indefinite value to them in after life. (4) Education develops the student's individuality. (5) Man gains self-respect and recognizes from others more by what he is than by what he possess. (6) College training opens up the vistas of the higher life, As an illustration that the Farmers' Union has for one of its cardinal doctrines that none of its officials shall hold political office, the president of a Geor gia division was elected a mem ber of the State legislature a few days ago and before he took his seat, the union held its annual convention' and his suc cessor was chosen. By this action the union proves that it is "co-operative and education al." not political, It has for its aim the agricultural advance ment of the country by modern business methods and by spread ing the gospel of scientific farm ing. This was graduation in Cleve land county High schools and a score or more of youSg men and women were given receipts for having gone through the institu tions. Let them continue their education and be prepared for the high duties of life. tehtion.
