Cleveland's Share 181 Men
Every man in Cleveland county is
subject to call before the exemption
board for examination. In. fact ev
ery man registered in the United Sta
tes will see his number drawn in the
lottery. The drawing was done in
order to determine the liability of
service. In other words the first
number willbe the first called before
the exemption board. The second
number drawn will be the second man
called and so on through the list un
til the 184 men allotted as Cleve
land county's part are accepted.
Should the government see fit to call
another half million or more men for
training and possible service later on,
the exemption- board will take up the
list where they left it off after se
curing our part (184 men,) and begin
on the selection of the second assess
men. So the further a man's name is
down the list the longer it will be be
fore he is called for examination.
The local board has power to ex
empt men physically unfit when
found to be so by the county physi
cian. Dr. E B. Lattimore. It has
power to exempt men with dependent
relatives fich as a wife, children un
der 12, etc. (See information else
where. )No exemptions can be grant
ed until application for exemption
has been made by affidavits. (All of
this information is printed in this
issue.)
It is estimated, that twice as many
men as needed will have to be called
up for examination. In other words
Cleveland county must furnish 184
men. The exemption board will call
at least 368 men and possibly more.
That is determined only by the num
ber of exemptions granted. Some
think 60 or 75 per cent of those call
ed will be exempted for various caus
es. In that cause it will be neces
sary to call up as many as 400 or
500 hundred men.
Friday's Star will furnish the re
mainder of the men registered in
Cleveland coonty and the order in
which their numbers have been
drawn.
Those who are called need not, fear
that they will be pressed into . ser
vicevice, if they have dependent re
latives and will make the fact known
to the local exemption board.
How Drawing Was Done
Friday's Dispatch:
It was shortly before ten o'clock
when Secrtary Baker, entrusted by
the President with the carrying out

Secretary Baker briefly explained
the purpose of the drawing, then
stepped forward to be blindfolded
and draw the fiijst number. Major
General Duval broke the seal and

each number came out. When a
;;roup of 500 numbers had been writ
ten the first section of the board was
taken out to be photographed to es
tablish an absolute record, while
second section was substituted.
By the laws of chance, the serial
number, one was brown from the jar
as number 4,269 in the liability list,
while number 10,500, the top num
ber among the capsules, came out
number 238. The serial thirteen,
fabled bearer of ill luck, was drawn
in the 7,890th place.
Registrants will receive no official
word of their order of liability until
their local boards summon them for
examination after official records of
the drawing have been transmitted to
them by mail.

The Cleveland county exemption
board composed of Messrs. John F.
Schenck of Lawndale, Attorney D. Z.
Newton and Dr. E. B. Lattimore of
Shelby has completed details for
their work which is approaching. A
room has been opened in the Court
House where these gentlemen who
are most in the public eye of Cleve
land county peoplo at this time, will
transact their business of issuing the
notices to the men drafted, call them
in for examination, pass on affidavits
and issue exemption certificates when
ever in their judgment they see fit
to do so. It is not necessary to see
any ot these gentlemen personally
until you have been summoned before
them. Oral appeals will not be lis-
toned to. Application for exemption
must be made in affidavits and not in
person by oral testimony. This local
board has no discretion. in the matter
of vocational or business exemption.
That is a matter for the district
board to pass upon.

DISTRICT BOARDS .
In every Federal judicial district,
there are one or more district boards
having appellate jurisdiction over a
number of local boards and having!
original jurisdiction of claims for ex
emption on ' industrial grounds. If
you intend to make a claim on indus
trial grounds, including agriculture,
learn what district board to apply to.

RED INK SERIAL NUMBERS
Every board has numbered the
cards in, its jurisdiction with red ink
in a series running from 1 to the
number representing the total num
ber of cards in its jurisdiction. Lists
showing the names of persons in the
jurisdiction of each board and the red
ink number of each card are open to
inspection at the office of each board.
Inspect the list and inform your
self of your red ink serial number.

ORDER OF LIABILITY
These red ink numbers are to b
drawn by lot to determine the order
in which registered persons are to
be called by the various local boards.
As soon as the drawing is complete
lists showing the order in which
these red ink numbers are drawn will
be published in the press, and will be

SEVEN DAYS TO FILE CLAIMS
OF EXEMPTION OR DISCHARGE
(Except for industrial or agricultural
reasons.)
(a) No claim of discharge on ac
count of the industry in which you
are engaged can be decided by a lo-
cal board. (See Por. W below.)
(b) Whether you file a claim of
exemption or not, you mast present
yourself for physical examination on
da named in he notice.
From the day notice that you are
called is mailed and posted you have
seven days in which you may file a
claim of exemption or discharge. The
form for filing this claim is simple.
If you wish to file such a claim
(a) Go to the board and get Form
110 for exemption or Form 121 for
discharge. If the board has not the
printed forms ask to consult the form
pamphlet and copy the form shown
there.
(b) Fill out the proper form and
file it with the board.
(c) Do this within seven days of
