WEATHERS,_President RENN DRUM-„ Local Editor Entered as second class matter '■’’oary 1. 1905, at the postotfice at Bltelby, North Carolina, under the A«t of Congress, March 3, 1879. Wa wish to call your attention to that it ii and has been ou* ••atom to charge five cents per line 91 resolutions of respect, cards of mnka and obituary notices, after ons Math notice has been published .This ■•le will be strictly adhered vo. FRIDAY DEC. 28, 1923. Here’s hoping each and every one had a happy Christmas and may the New Year be one of prosperity full of the better things of life. New records are gradually added. In addition to mak-ing a record crop of cotton having the best fox dog in the state and outstripping oui 99 sister counties in the production of butter, this has been a record, year in busi ness for the merchants, Christmas eve established a new record in the size of the crowd gathered here in any one single day and it looks now as if, next year will be a record year in ! building in Shelby. CALL FOR OUR FART. It is learned on good authority that the money might not be available ’li the construction of the hard surface road from Shelby to the Rutherford i county line, beftig a part of the ,'h;u lotte-Asheville highway. When State Highway Commissioner Kistler of Morganton was in Shelby at a meeting of the Kiwanis club some I months ago, he assured us that dur ing his administration each county could receive its pro rata part. He estimated under this plan the county would get enough to build at least half of the road and expressed the hope that enough more might be se cured under Federal aid to make the road a reality. This we were promis ed and confidently expected until our hopes were blasted a few days ago on' an authorative report that Cleveland would get no more hard- surface un der the present arrangement. Ruth erford county is in a similar plight, but is making a vigorous complaint to the state highway commission. If we are to get the share we are entitl ed to, some concerted effort should be made at once. Cleveland has gotten only 14 miles of hard surface out of the state's road fund,—a stretch from Kings Moun tain to Shelby. Certainly we are just ly entitled to and should by all means have one main highway across the county out of the state’s 65 million dollar roade-building program. NEW KECORDS ESTABLISHED. A new high record in volume of business done Was ''established (his year by the Shelby merchants. All report that their business has well ex ceeded any previous year. Many of them sold completely out of holiday goods, while there is little carry-over of fall and winter wearables. Profits have been pleasing also. While the goods were marked at a reasonable! profit, business continued steadily good throughout the year and mer chants were able to turn their stocks fast. The fall weather was ideal and the early harvest started business off in a most gratifying manner. Per haps in volume, October ■ exceeded either November or December. The merchants had one great advantage this year over that of the year 1019, the high priced year everybody was money-mad and peak prices prevail ed. This year the prices were more stable and merchandise coaid be re place at or near the same level of prices. Indications are that the pres ent prosperity of the country has a more solid foundation and is not apt to .“deflate" like 1920 when every body lost their earnings of 1919. Not only do merchants jleclare that this year was then* largest in history', but Monday, (Christmas eve) was the biggest single day on record. Anoth er record was established in the crowd that gathered here. By far it sur passed in size any witnessed before. All parking “space within two or three blocks of the square in every direc tion was filled. The number of auto mobiles ran into the thousands. No circus has ever drawn such an 1m meuse throng of people as come on Christmas eve. Unknown Man Found Stricken on Road •leken With Paralysis He Is Treat >d E. B. ID] ua CHIROPRACTIC (KiRo-Prac-tic) is a now sci no1 of adjusting the cause of disease, without drugs, based on a thorough Knowledge of the nervous sys tem. Nerves which control th-» various functions of the body emerge from small, openings between the bony segment of the spinal column. A slight variation of the bones will cause pressure on a nerve and cut or decrease the flow of mental impulses, lowering the vitality and the power of resistance of the tissues, the result of which is disease. * The Chiropractic method is to adjust the abnormality, remove the pressure by removing the cause and thus permit the nerve to regain its normal si'/e and function, restoring health. If you are ill and have tried everything also without results, throw aside pre judice, try Chiropractic spinal adjustments and get well. DR. B. M.
