A. Graham prominent North Carolina c’tizen and statesman, it was learned recently that one of his old slaves was found to be still living- in the town of Mount Holly. Albert Hright Gra ham is his name, and his age is some where in the 70s. This negro says that he was owned as a boy by the Gra ham family at Hillsboro. When the late Major Graham came to Lincoln county to live he brought Albert with him along iwth scores of other slaves. Since that time he has lived in this section of the state, and for the last 25 years he has made his home in Mount Holly where he has been in the employ of C. E. Hutchison, well known capitalist. The negro tells some interesting stories of all mem bers of the famous Graham family. He states that he has done house and farm service for various Grahams since boyhood. He is now getting old . and feeble, has a large family and is popular in Mount Holly with both white and black. Sinner Force At Gastonia. Gastonia Gazette. Mr. G. V. Small Number Cases Before Recorder 'I rue love may not run amooth’y, but rejected love fails to “hit on oil six” at times. Tuesday night Ma ;k Toole, colored, "romcod” out to Cle/ land Springs to pay a call to a dusky maid employed there. Things did not vo-k out so well and Mack became the least bit boisterous with the rv Tt that Chief Hamrick and Deputy . Mike Austell brought him back from 1 iis date and had him dated up with lodge Tails for Wednesday morning, 'here he was fined $5 and the cos o ! "or d sorderly conduct. Other eases heard during the week nrluded: Hatcher Glover, taking part I in a “rough house” at the Southern cafe Saturday night; fined $25 ai d II he costs. Charlie Bridgman, retailing; given i sentence of six months, which was i} pealed. A New Year's Prayer. rile Expositor. Our glorious Lord and Savior, as we stop across the threshold into the New Year, we owe to thee the grati. tude of our hearts for the abundant dossing* that have enriched our lives hrongh the year that has just reach 'll' its close. They are more than we ; n reckon, and we know that they are the gifts of Eternal Goodness. 1 ooking out toward the unknown future, we trust ourselves to thy un orr ng leadership and thy loving care. Help us to follow faithfully where I over thou niayest lead, even though 'he way brings us into places when human souls are tested to the utmost. Give us a faith that takes firm hold upon Omnipotence; a faith that turns not hack in the day of the hottest battle; a faith that never doubts in he darkest hour that God lives and 'lie right will triumph. May we so live that even those who oppose us will not question our loyal *” 1° f hr st. God of holiness, keep t»s ure in heart, so pure that we shall h ive the unfailing vision of thyself. We desire to be blessed with an in i-casing love for thee. Oh! the un . fathomable depths of our Father’s 'ove! Lord, give us a deeper under taruling of the mvstery of Calvary, reach us more fully the meaning of O’vine sacrifice. Father, give us work to do, inspir mr work, that shall rouse our spirit ual enthusiasm to its highest mark; hard work, that shall tost our cour age and our strength. Help us to serve after the manner of Jesus our Lord; to deal kindly witH little children; to lighten the burdens >f the aged; to bring new courage nto the home of poverty; to let they sunlight into the hearts of the sick and the suffering; to speak Christ’s wondrous message of consolation t« those who are under the shadow of bereavement; to give the handclasp of real friendship to the discouraged; • o visit the prisoner in his loneliness; to be a brother to the social outcast; to champion the cause of the oppre sed; to manifest the tenderness and strength of the Christ spirit to all those whose lives we touch. We pray that the kingdom of God may come and that the will of God may be done on earth as it is in heav en; that the people of God may wit ness more faithfully concerning the great salvation that is in Jesus Christ; that the great missionary en terprise may be pushed forward with militant zeal and consecrated vigor until the farthest limits of our earth shall rejoice in the knowledge of our Lord. We pray that the Church may be blessed with a wider social vision and l that it may enter into the work of so cial reconstruction in the very spirit of the Master. Wo pray that justice may be rendered in the realm of in dustry, that the causes which produce vice and crime may be removed, that our cities may bo cleansed, that throughout all our borders we may possess the righteousness that exalt eth a nation. God of infinite mercy, forgive our sins. rfow much thou hast to forgive in us May thy Spirit dwell in us and preserve us from all evil! Let the beauty of thy holiness be upon us! We cannot see through the mists that veil the future, but we go forward unafraid, for thou art our God, the God to whom we pray in Je sus’ name. Amen. The first definite step towards the Cleveland county fair of the coming fall has been taken. Considerable work and preparation remains how ever if the fair is to be a credit to the county it will represent.
