IS WORTH LOOKING INTO For Full Particulars Write (Bond Department) AMERICAN TRUST COMPANY; Frank B. Green, Manager. Charlotte, N. C. He Will Preach And Let The “Hants” Sing Union Preacher Determined To Hold Services '1 Old Hnunted Church. ____ Monroe Journal. ‘‘I propose to do the preaching ar.dj let the hants do the singing when we j hold the meeting in the old haunted I church,” Rev. J. J. Brooks, red head ed Free Will Baptist preacher of Kannapolis, told the Journal recently when asked about his intention to preach in a haunted and deserted church house. Mr. Brooks has been warned that he cannot preach in that old house for many a preacher has tried it before ] and failed .according to the traditions' clinging aiound it. He has made an appointment to preach there last Sun- j fday and true to his promise he drove] there in the great cold but the cangre- j gation could not make it, and so the] event was called off for the present However, Mr Brooks, is going again just as soon as travel permits The old church is located in a deserted sec tion of the country many miles away from good reads and it is no easy job to get there. Mr. Breaks tells The Journal that the haunted church is old Poplar Springs Methodist church, twenty-J seven miles southeast from exington i on the Cotton Grove Road. He neglect- j etl to asl; what county it is situated j in hut thinks it must be the lower part | of Randolph. The house was desert- j cd twenty-seven years ago and has J fallen into considerable decay. McBRAYER’S < He Carries The Big Stock And Sells The Goods. the cause of its desertion bloody f.> t prints and hand prints on wall and •ceiling, is in full evidence, for they ere as plain as they were years ago. People in the locality talk very slow ly about the church and the cause of >ts desertion and the old membership has never taken on any new relation ships. According to the story they just stopped when the mystery got too great for them. The bloody prints be gan coming slowly. First they appear ed dimly and then grew deeper. They extended over the walls gradually and over the ceiling till there is not a square foot on either that has not bloody finger prints. There are fig, ures which appear to have been made in blood even in the shape of a dog's foot, and infants’ feet are quite*read ily discernible. The old building is a very ancient one, having been erected in the 18th century and is muc1 more than a hundred years old. It has Igten recovered in time but walls and ceil ing are made of boards sawed by the ^ild time up and down strip saws, and are put up with the home-made rails. There are no blood marks upon the scats or floor. The peculiar noise which has driven away preaheers in time gone by, Mr. Brooks is told, consists of much groaning and singiiar in the manner of cId time negro slaves. In fact the belief seems to be that the invincible choir is composed of the spirit voices of departed slaves, though just why they should be doing the haunting, tradition does not say. When Mr. Brocks was told that he could not preach in the church for this singing and groaning, he informed the people that he would preach if the spirits would be satisfied to do the. singing and let him do his part. Mr. Brooks, who lives at Kannapo lis, has some work in this county and come down here frequently. It wa on such a trip recently that he told The .Journal about the haunted Church’ he has found.
