Career has been ■> disease known and diagnose I with 'noreier |e*a awom.y for more thi n ; three thousand years, yet it is a die- ; ease in .which definite information i* today Wftefdlly lacking. The specific jj • cause of cancer is unknown. It is a disease that rots down, in their prime i in late middle life, more men of in- | fluenre and importance in the econom ic scheme of think* in this State than possibly any other disease. There is ] no subject in disease prevention that I can ire of more importance than a > study and a discussion of methods f that might result in the lowering of | the prevalence of thir terrible disease.j Tire disease has from the beginningI of time been a aource of lucrative in- i come to quacks and fakers of every •tripe who have preyed like human | vultures on their unfortunate fellow human beings. It 1* suggested here that, tne prin cipal of every school in the State of North Carolina provide for a short talk to all the pupils from the seventh I grade up by some local physician or j surgeon of high standing and reputa tion and character in the individual communities; this talk to be delivered > some time during the second wdcli in ; February. The purpose of this is to have a State-wide effort through le gitimate channels in order to impart some badly needed inform:.t io.i con cerning what is known about cancer, The only thing neccssury to bring this “bout is for the teacher to request some physician of known ability to make a short talk on this particular subject at some hour during that week convenient to all concerned. We are devoting considerable space in this issue of the North Carolina Health Bulletin to this question. We are quoting liberally fiW the litera ture of the American Society for the Control of Cancer and from Dr. Frederick L, Hoffman, who is chair man of a special committee on statis tics for the above-named society. The talks that the physicians will make on this subject will of course emphasize as clearly as it is humanly possible to do the importance of uti early diagnosis. That is, uny jierson old or young having a suspicions symptom like so-called indigestion or n suspicious bump or lump or sore on the body should at once und without daluy arrange for a thorough exami nation, or repeated examinations if necessary, by a competent physician until any suspicion of the danger or cancer is totally removed. One of the most important tilings to accentuate is the danger of ragged and decayed tacth which are long neglected and which frequently cause cancer in the mouth. It would be adviwible wher ever good dentists are available to have u special talk made on this sub ject by a dentist, who would of course confine himself to the subject or de ll fwUve tw,th •» ^e relation to cancer WRKLEYS After Every Meat the longest-lasting yon can hay a help to dl and a cleanser for die mouth and teeth.
