"The Looker On” Writes About “What is a Gentleman?” In reading an essay by Irving Bach eller on "What is a Gentleman.” The little hoy’s definition certainly had the spirit of a real gentleman when he said "A gentleman takes off his hat in the presence of a lady, always washes his hands before he goes to *!”■ "jii i' ' ■ ia c the table, eats kind o’ slow and de> liberate, knows when to &ay ‘excuse me’ and never forgets the state of the weather. I.wrfnt to make myself agreeable so that folks’ll like me.” A man who is satisfred with him self can easily be a gentleman with out the spirit of ehlvalry, and a gen tleman no matter what his philos ophy, must respect the feelings and have at least some deference for the opinions of other people. Demosthen es was the most persuasive man in history. I wonder if his power came not largely from the fact that he never dropped the tone of the gen tleman. (Continued on page five.)
