KVill Make Attempt To “Shoot The Moon” __ Scientist Huilds Steel Rocket for Trip To Neighboring Planet in Summer Some day in the summer a steel it,ekct will be shot from the earth +o tier At least the attempt will be made. I *. ft a larger rochet will follow the :pm<; course. Inside of it will he a man who may continue living, but in a vlorld all bis own. Professor Robert IT. Goddard, of Clark university, :u Worcester, Mass, is working « 1 the moon rocket, which he invented. Experiments made in his laboratory have convinced the profes sor that the project he plans is pos sible, according to. Mr. Goddard. The rocket will be built' of strong steel and will be propelled by gases at a speed of 5,000 miles an hour. Light reflected by the nfoor against sensi tive plates will keep the projectile true to its course, and a quantity pf explosives in its nose will explode to announce Us arrival at the neighbor ing planet. Giant telescope's will watch its journey. The rocket must travel 100 miles in 15 seconds so that it can escape the earth’s pull of gravity. It must be strong enough to endure the vacuum which exist;, between the aflnosphere '■if the n*non ;.M(i the earth. All these dualities' haAm been provided by Pro fessor Goddard. The professor has built a model~ his rocket and has tested it in vacuum tubes in his laboratory with such suc ct lha ho > 'ieves the experiment can he made early in September. “•'iter the ,',i;.nt telescope tells us that the rocket has h«t the moon,” Professor (.1 ddj’.r.l oxultiHied, ‘‘we will begin construction of Hie projectile which is to carry a man on the same trip.
