Me Murry were delightful hosts at a rook party j on Tuesday evening. The house was beautifully deaerated with spring flowers and four tables of rook was played. Sanders entertained Entre Nous club. Thayer-Gold Wedding Solemnised ut Blacksburg, S. C. A wedding of much interest both in North and South Carolina was that of Miss Thelma Gold of Hlucksburg, S. C., to Sgt. Milton Y. Thayer of Long Island, N. Y., which was solemnised Saturday morning at 10 o’clock, Mar. 0th. The bride is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Gold, of Blacks burg, S. C. and is especially gifted in art and eypression. She received her business training at Kings Business college, Charlotte. Sergeant Thayer is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Yarnell Thayer of Georgia and New York. He was with the famous Second division over seas and since the armistice has been with the U. S. marine recruiting corps stationed at various points south. After a few months the happy couple will be at their beatiful home, Rockville Centre, 44 South Centre avenue. Long Island, N. Y. Riley entertained the Ce celia Music club on Wednesday after noon at the home of her parents Judge and Mrs. James L. Webb. This being a social meeting, Mrs. Riley had asked Mr. Buchanan and Miss Mary Griffin to play for the dub, and Mrs. Arthur Dixon of Gastonia to sing. These artists were at their best and delighted not only the club members but a few guests who were also pres ent. The home was decorated with peach blossom;; and in the dining room the table had for its center piece a silver bas ket with peach blossoms. The table wa covered with >'■ lace pier • and at one end Mrs. W. !•'. Mitchell poured coffee from a sil ver service and Mrs. J. L. C. Entertained Home of Mrs. DoggeH. The U. IE C.’s were delightfully en tertained at the home of Mrs. C. R. B Baltimore, Mrs* Tom Baltimore and Mrs. Paul Woll mon. After the roll call and minutes Mrs. Morgan, the president called on Mrs. Kiley to rend the report of the U. IE ('. district meeting held in Gas tonia last week, at. which meeting Mrs. W. B Nix was elected district leader and Mrs. W. F. Mitchell was elected secretary. The list of prizes, offered by different people of the stave on various subjects pertaining to the U. D. C.’s.was also read by Mrs. Riley It was voted to have the Confederate veterans dinner given by the daugh ters at Cleveland Springs hotel on the 10th of May, The president will ap point a committee to name the speak er and plan the program. Convenin'? nt 11 o’clock in the morning in the ladies parlor of the First Baptist church, with the Gas tonia U. 1). C„ chapter as hostesses. The meeting was presided over by Mrs. I,. B Nfvvell, of Charlotte, dis trict director. Following this, Mrs. E. C. Spen cer, president of the Gastonia chap ter, welcomed the guests Response to this was made by Mrs. Charles E. Platt, of Charlotte. The roll call was answered by all the chaptei s of the district as fol lows: Charlotte, Lincolnton, Gastonia, Shelby, Kings Mountain and ltuther fordton. The reading of the minutes by Mrs. W. M. Robey of Charlotte, secretary of the third district, fol lowed. Following this, the state officers were introduced by Mrs. Newell, pre senting fir*. R. P. Holt, the state president, mid Mrs. Dolph Long, state registrar. Mrs. Martha Haywood, of Raleigh, another officer and chairman of the Old Soldior'n home, who was unable to atend sent an interesting re port of the work at the Old Confeder ate soldiers home Mrs. Ilolt told of the plans of the U. D, C. to erect permanent markers, boulders with tablets, on the Jeffer son Davis highway on the Virginia North and South Carolina lines be fore the next convention. She asked the U. D. C. tocontribute funds for a monument being put up at Manches ter, La,, by the Paris, France chap ter, U. D. C. This chapter is compos ed of only eight njembers, descend ants of a French general who fought with the Confederacy and in whose memory the monument is being erect ed. ~ Mrs. Newell reported the organisa tion of a Yeung Matrons’ chapter last week in Charlotte, and also reported on the educational fund of the N. C, division. She announced that six new scholarships have been given for de scendants of Confederate veterans to take effect in September, there being already ift scholarships now in the state. She announced an endowment fund of $2,560 for the N. C. C. W by Mr. Mild Mrs Fraidc Kirkman of High Point, in memory of a daughter. Two de'ightful song.', rendered by Mi** Marie Torrence, were greatly enjoyed, and the meeting was adjourn ed for lunch. At 2:30 chapter reports were heard from, all reporting a splendid growth ' in size and in interest. Art interesting repi rt was given] from the childrens chapter at Bel mont. showing great proress and atcivny—and a gorx! report was also given by the Shelby children's chap ter. The election of officers for the en suing year then fallowed, resulting in the election of Mrs. W. B. Nix. of Shelby, as district director of the 3rd (Continued on page two.)
