At the Kiwahis meeting Thursday i night when the senior class of the j baseball champions were entered, Wm. j Lincborgcr who had charge of the j program read the following in‘«'rest ing review of Sunt. I. C. Griffin’s j eight years at the head of the Shelby j Public Schools: "Mr. Griffin asked me to take charge of this program and is in no way responsible for what I have to; say. He was hald headed and a heavy i weight before he came to Shelby.-^ — j big enough to do things and active enough not to be clumsy in doing them so I want to say a few' words about our schools during the eight years he has been at their helm. “Salisbury, the place from which he came. "Goosecreck township, Un:on County is where he was born. Just when I do not. know. I do know that during his eight years in Shelby our public schools have kept pace w ith our growth along other various lines and 1 want to review a few of his ac complishments. When he tame here there were 575 enrolled in oiy public schools. This year we had 1600.— nearly 300 per cent increase. Then we employed 16 teachers—today we have 45 with A grade certificates to prove their ability to do the job right. This year there lacked only ten being as many in our graduating class as there were in the entire high school the year before Mr. Griffin came to vs. “Look at these departments that have been added during these eight years. A 11th grade was added and the courses of study raised so that the school has been placed on the ac credited list of high schools entitling the graduate to enter any college or university in the South without fur ther examination. School officials and high school graduates appreciate what this means more than we business men. A commercial department has been added. A teacher training de partment has been added and in the course of a few years we hope to have a normal teacher training school supported by the state. Eight years ago our main school building had 12 class rooms. Since he came and the enrollment has multiplied so fast, three school buildings have been erected for white children and one for .he colored. Eight years ago there were 12 class rooms in the white schools and three in the colored. To day we have 30 white class rooms I and eight for colored. “The cost this year for running our ichools has been $40 per pupil or $4.50 per month or only 25c per day less than the average cigar smoker burns up each day. “Mr. Griffin has ’ set such a high standard for our schools, their repu tation is known far and wide. Tile honors our hoys and girls have taken in North Carolina prove that, but this word for closer home. There are 75 pupils enrolled in the high school from outside the city. Many of these come every school day from as far as ten miles in the country and if you will look around the school building some day you may think our town boys and girls are too lazy to walk and have to ride to school, hut these are country boys and girls who motor in from a distance. “You heard what Mr. Draper the landscape man said two weeks ago tonight. Mr Griffin not only trains their minds and bodies, but the school , grounds and the hospital grounds arc tlie best kept public premises in Shel by. Griffin is responsible. Wo are proud of him and his eight year rec ord. These boys and girls who are with us tonight, 64 strong, are evi dence of his value to us as a school official. “His is a big job. He is virtually the ‘daddy’ of 1,600 children every school day in the year. We tire sometimes in our home of two or three, just how he gets by with it I can’t understand. You ean have the job, ‘Daddy’ Griffin." Fallston Boy Wins Honors At Trinity The county of Cleveland is repre sented in this year’s graduating class at 1 rinity college Mr tSamey has pur sued a business course, and will re. ceive an A. B. degree in business ad ministration upon graduation. Mr. Stanley plans to enter the busi ness world during the coining year, and with the aid of the ' business course at Trinity college in which he attained high honors, undoubtably will become one of the leaders in busi. ness life. While a student at Trinity college, Mr. Stanley was an active member of the Columbia literary society, parti cipating in many debates. He also was a member of the college band for tierce years. Shelby Also. (From Gastonia Gazette.) A traveling man dropped into The Gazette office a few days ago to i make public complaint of the dogs that howl constantly around the Arm* ington hotel at night. He says they belong to guests of the hotel and make a sleepless night hideous for tired traveling men. This is given as a mat ter of information. He said much more but it couldn’t be printed in a family newspaper like The Gazette. Wray-Hudson Co.f calls your atten. tion to our special prices on Men’s overalls. 50c saved is 50c made. Ad Preacher Tell* Of Type He Votes For 1 — (Rev. J). C. Johnson in Smithfieid * Herald.) I will say lam not a candidate for office for I hold the highest office in the world and that is a minister of the Gospel, but I am a candidate for men to fill the office that do not drink in to xicating liquors and men that will use their influence against this great evil. Now, if there is a man on this ticket that can fill this place, write me by return ma’l and I will use my influence for him. Cod sometime suffers the wicked to obtain great power that they may he scournges ot his people on account of their sins. No trials without the grace of God will humble jnd purify the hu man heart or lead men to forsake their slhs and turn to God. In my judgment there ha snever been a time when men and women need to spend more time on their knees than now, in order that we may have righteous rul ers in our government. Now to the church members: What in the name of the good ord do you mean and ho wdo yo uexpect our country to get any better so long as you do not aid in any way. Now to the young ladies of our country. How do you expect to be any help in driving this evil out when yo uwill getjup and ride with young men an<7 their breath smelling like a slop tub? “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging and whosoever is de ceived thereby is not wise.” Prov. 20:1 “Be not deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap.” Gal. C:7. Now join me in prayer, “Blessed Father, may we all be led by your Omnipotent Hand to the ballot box and vote for the right men is my prayer for Christ’s sake. Amen.” A. B. C. overalls. A. R. ADVERTISE IN THE STAR, THE FAMILY Ocean Phone Line Inaugurated Soon Service Between New York And I on don On The Ocean Liners By Radio Telephone. Some time in November a New York business man will lift the receiv er off the telephone and speaking in to the mouthpiece will exclaim: •‘Hello!” says the New York Herald Tribune. At the same instant a Lon don business man will speak into a telephone in the British capital, in quirin'?, “Are you there?” This, the American Telephone and Telegraph company announced yes terday, would mark the beginning of rpgular telephone service between New York and London. And, what works between these two cities can operate just as successfully, in time, between New York and Paris, Venice, I Constantinople and Rio De Janeiro A dispatch from London ..printed in ■ yesterday’s New York Llerald Tribane | announced that Great Britain, through i its postal denartment, intended to es | tablish a 200-kilowatt radio telephone I plant at Rugby. It will be similar to j bat used for the last eighteen months i by the American Telephone company 1 here and the Radio Corporation of \merica. What will happen is this: bubscrib •rs at each end will ha connected to their radio stations by wire telephone lines. At the outset the service will depend lafgely upon atmospheric con. ditions, which change from hour to hour. But the wireless engineers are convinced they will be able to cope with static within a reasonable length of time. Then again, on January 14. 1923, th“ companys’ president, H. B. Thayer speaking from 105 Broadway, was heard by a grOup of engineers in New Southgate, England. The answers from London, however, had to be sent by cablegram. Next winter the answer will be instantan eous, over the wireless telephone. Experts have found that owing to udden changes in atmospheric condi tions, it sometimes is necessary to use 10,000 times as much power to get tudible speech across the ocean as it is at other periods. : Macaroni Made Of Best Wheat } Somewhat Intricate I’r;>ccss Involved In Manufacture Of Popular Foodstuff. M-acaroni rated high in nutritive oatent. 1ligh grade macaroni is made rf>>" do-iw, v.h' ' f semolina, which is produced from the choicest and most .utrit ous Dart or' the wheaf k'-rnf-l After the semolina is sifted it is "nixed with water in a dough mixer. The well-mixed dough is then tranv ‘erred to a circular kneading machine where it is kneaded until it is smooth in texture and possesses a certain resiliency. * Now the dough is ready to be form ’d into macaroni. This is done by forc ing the dough under hydraulic pres sure, about 5,000 pounds to the square inch, through a cylinder with a bronze die at the bottom. This die is full of holes, about a quarter, of an inch in diameter, and each hole has a pin in the center, which is attached to two sides of the hole. The pin forms the hole in the macaroni and divides the dough as it passes through. But, be fore the dough reaches the end of the hole, the divided parts come together again and remain so, making a per fect tube. The macaroni is then cut into prop er lengths and is taken to the curing room where it takes from two to five days to thoroughly dry. After the ma caroni is thoroughly dry it is packed for shipment. Spaghetti is made in the same way, except that the holes in the die are smaller and there is no pin in the center to form a hollow tube.
