The Yanks Were A Gentlemanly Sort \Vh««n They Occupied the Court Square in Shelby Murine the Civil War, She Kememkers. To F.ditor of The Star: While eagerly scanning the Cleve land Star my eyes* rested upon the following: "The Yanks Once Camped on the Court Square”. This carried my mem ories away back to other days of long ngo when the “Yanks” as they were termed located themselves on the court square of Shelby, and assumed complete control of Shelby and in habitants, I remember well all, in re gard to my feelings however, we very soon realized that the majority of those men were gentlemen of re. finement who manifested their high est regards for the inhabitants of Shelby. 1 was more than agreeably surprised to meet such a rare treat that a ank could be n real genuine gentleman. However, 1 have not Hnd even now never met more polished gentlemen than the majority of those men who soldiered on the court square. During their sojourn we found the calling around of the offi cers very agreeable. We found each of them pleasant and very genteel. This remembrance of mine is of long ago, when many dear friends of Shelby have passed away, when I am yet blessed with a life of health and comparative happiness. However I may soon realize that I too, may lay draws the drapery of her coucn about aside the garb of mortality and put on that of immortality. As or.i that herand lies do\|-n to pleasant dreams. Mrs. Hattie Jenkins Garloch. San Pedro, aClif. IM MEMORY OF MRS. MARVIN LUTZ. Angels came and took our mother, whom we loved and cherished dear. It was Mother, yes dear Mother, can we help but shed a tear? And how hard we tried to save her; all we did was all in vain, Happy Angels came and took her, from this world of toil and pain We stayed near you mother dear, we stayed with you all we could, We longer to see your sweet face mwhen life held you so we could. And hearts are ever aching, although we smile each day, For our thoughts are all with mother, whom God has called away. Your suffering was short, you mur mured not; you waited patient ly for the call, Until at last with smiling face you ouietly passed away. From this world of pain and sorrow, to the land of peace and rest, God has taken you dear wife, where you found eternal rest. We shall never cease to miss you, un til on the Golden Shore, We shall meet and live forever, where life partings come no more. Oh, Dear wife, you smile so sweet upon me for a kiss, When you held my hand in yours, with a strong and loving clasp. Now my heart is almost broken, look ing for my dear wife home; But she is now in heaven’s window, Beckoning now for us to come. Mother thou was mild and lovely, gentle as the summer's breeze. Pleasant as the air of evening when it Ghats among the trees. Peaceful be thy silent slumber, peace ful in the grave so low, Thou no more will join our number; thou no more our song shall know. Dearest mother thou has left us, but your memories are so sweet, Could we see you now, Dear Mother, walking heaven’s golden streets. Yet again we hope to meet thee, when the day of life is fled; Then in heaven with joy to greet thee, there no farewell tears are shed. Husband and Children. Commits Suicide at Funeral. Chicago, Sept. 14.—As mourners attending two funerals today looked on, a man prepared a pile of dry twigs drenched himself with kerosene and set fire to his clothing. Persons close at hand were unable to reach him in time and the flames soon en veloped him. When they were extin guished the man still was conscious. He gave his name as Joseph Kopu sea, but would offer no explanation of his act. He died several hours later. x<2hBCalfot,LIOo, W SUMMONS. vs. ’ ^etendant. entitled action'.d**endant *n the above ‘ioD<hasrL5r*b3r.,?otified that an *c ior CtTrW1^ in the Su^r PurPo.st 0f Cleveland county for the Cl! obtaining an absolute di SePar*tiim j grounds of five year’s tfiiffi thU the summon* is S“Wrior Lil°7 Clerk <*W his o*ice in sl<itC tJwland °°Unty >» ?toh« 13th vffi’ N: C;> Motviey ln said act inn ?nd the cewpiaint thi* Vffice nil,has been d«»y filed in fie< ^ vo,*^1 you are further noti answ*r to not aPPear a*»d make wia demaM^.—<l*nt the pUiataff ■* “kM ,OT ™ ^°«rt.
