I (By Rev. R. L. Lemons, Fnstor of First Baptist Church, Shelby, N. C.) As pastor of the First Baptist j church of Shelby I offer congratula tions to th«‘ pn&tor and people of the | Central Methodist church on ti e com- | pletlon of their most magnificent ! house of worship. A real contribu- ! lion to the architectural beauty of ! I Shelby has been made by the Mctho- ! dist people. Not only is th s chi rrh building beautiful but its appoint-1 inents say a loud word for religious ! education, religious training and the ' cultivation of the social life tir er | j religious auspices. The commodious and inviting auditorium will take care of large congregations of wor- 1 sliipers. The first business of the church, “the preaching of the Gos pel,” has been provided for in a large and delightful way. Worship will be ! magnified in the solicitous surround- j inprs of this sanctuary. The Sunday School has been made prominent in finest provisions for teaching the Word of God under most favorable circumstances. The church that lives and serves must train for such life and service. The equipment of this church building bivites such training. The church that does not recognize its obligation to provide for the cul- i tivation of the social life and that ^ does not seek to make such provision ■ is certSfRTy committing suicide. Our i Methodist fr.ends hav ebeen true to 1 this social vision and this fine monu ment to the good judgment ami wise planning of trfe leaders is a great testimony to this constructive vision. It may be that this building will not need to he replaced in half a century ! but it is certainly true that it will minister to the needs now, and for ; years to come. We felicitate you, our brethren, most heartily, on this architectural power of usefulness and beauty. Old Church Enlarged . Under Pastorate Of Rev. C. F. Sherrill This Was Done In 1902 After Which Church Was Consecrated With Great Revival, Adding 63. It was under the pastorate of Rev. C. F. Sherrill that the Methodist church in 1902 was enlarged and beautified. The old church was the' regular style of churches whir, it was built, oblong with only one room In this room all the services of the church were held. This was the first church in Shelby that had different j Sunday school. Counting the church , auditorium, dining room and kitchen, the new church had seventeen (17) j rooms. It was with a beautiful and ! zealous spirit that the members worked in the erecting of this tem ple. The opening services marked a great day in Shelby. The sister de nominations worshiped with the Methodists. A former pastor, Rev. J. Ed. Thompson gave fine gospel mes sages morning and night. Rev. C. F. Sherrill had his heart set on consecrating the church vith a great revival. To this end the zeal ous congregation worked nobly with the pastor. The last Sabbath of the meeting was a great day. At the morning hour 65 persons were re ceived into the church on profession of laith. This is the largest number that ever joined church in Shelby at one time on profession oif faith. So beautiful was the spirit of work and of giving that Mr. Sherrill brought before the congregation the advisability and benefit of support nig u native preacher in China. In a little while the full amount was se cured, and in addition to the erec tion of the beautiful church edifice, the congregation supported two pas tors, one here and one in China. Robinson Electric Fixtures Furnished The electric euipment in the new Central Methodist church building is in thorough keeping with the hand some structure. This equipment was furnished by the Robinson Electric company of Charlotte. Mr. Robinson having been engaged in this business for about 20 years. The company re cently moved into its new building in Charlotte, consisting of two stories and mezzanine. The first floor is devoted to sales, rooms, the mezzanine to offices, and the second floor to display and stock rooms. The windows of the new store are expected to prove an attractive feature of the establishment. The display rooms on the second floor are subdivided into three distinct departments, the first being a gen eral displav, the second showing fix tures for the home in the proper set ting, and the third exhibiting com mercial electrical fixtures. The firm will continue to maintain its construction department, Mr. Rob inson announces, and a competent corps of electricians will be kept on hand to install apparatus, or to ful fill electrical contracts of the organi zation.
