Saunders Paying For His Attack Prominent Elizabeth City Newspaper- ^ man Being Met With Sneers for Attacking “Prophet Hum." (By W. 0. Saunders.) Elizabeth City, Nov. 22.—I go home and find the faithful girl who works in my kitchen nervous and in tears. Some religious fiend has told her that, in remorse over my attacks on the Prophet Horn, I have shot myself in the head. My little girl 12 years old comes home flushed and furious. Children in her classroom at school—children from so-called religious homes of the town —have taunted her with pictures of the devil, which they tell her are pic tures of her father. A little child from another ‘decent Christian family” comes by my office and sticks her tongue out, making a vrry face. “A good Christian woman” turns upon me on the streets when some one refers to my beautiful dog as my body-guard and says with vicious con tempt “W. O. Saunders needs a body guard; and he needs a God!” On every hand I am given black j and ugly looks by people who call; themselves followers of the gentle Christ. I am spoken to icily or con-j tempuously, according to the moods of these “Christian” converts. News is brought to me that prom inent “Christiana” in this town are putting their heads together and say ing thut “some action should be taken against old Saunders.” An entire, family that Jute boen- l>e-~. friended time after time by this news paper sends a blanket cancellation of the subscription of every member of the fafnily,, knifing me, who has been their friend for IS years, in behalf of a strange preacher who camps on the town for a few weeks and is gone. Men who call themselves my friends j tell me privately that 1 have done aj great work in bringing Ham to task J for his loose talk. and that 1 have made him change his tactics—-and thenj they withhold their advertising from this newspaper. In my morning's mail comes a let ter from an irate Christian brother who has been reading my paper for years; all of a sudden he has discov ered that I am a bad man, he orders his paper stopped and tells me I am ‘doomed to burn in a lake of everlast ing fire,” if I do not repent. (He means submit). My faithful employes report that they are accosted by converts of the Ham-Ranisey meeting, who tell them that they are in danger of hell-fire if they continue to work for me, and sev eral of my men have been abused and insulted by your so-called Christians. My heart is made heavy; it requires all of my courage, all of my strength and a heavy draught upon my sense of humor, to keep from losing faith ’ in humanity; if I could be made to hate j my whole being might be turned to hate—hatred for your churches, your preachers, and your God. £ S Washington To Honor Late Woodrow Wilson Washington, Nov. 28.—Official tri bute by the government of the United States to the memory of Woodrow Wil son, who for eight years was its chief executive, is to he paid Monday, De cember 15. under tentative plans worked out today. The proposed resolution, it is under stood, will provide for the holding in the house of a joint session of the two houses to which the President, his cabinet, the supreme court and diplo mats of foreign nations will he invited.
