FISHING TIME The fish season is here and some marvelous fish stories are being told. The Anderson Mail prints the follow ing:: "A real interesting fish story comes from out Port man way. And it is au thentic. W. J. Rowland and Joe Waters fell in Seneca river when their boa‘» was overturned as they were pulling in a 40-pound blue cat from a trout line. Although they were a bit wet when it was over, they were victor ious and landed their prize. It was one of the largest catfish ever caught in the Seneca, it is said.” Hut the Greenwood Index-Journal goes considerably better with this one! "G. Shep Yeldell brought back from McCormick county yesterday the prize fish story of the season—or for many seasons past, for that matter. “It happened on the Savannah river near Palm Branch several days ago, as told to Mr. Yeldell, on a visit to that section yesterday morning, and an un fortunate negro and a whale of a carp are the principals. The negro had been fishing for some time and had had what most fishermen meet most of the time—many bites but no fish. So fin ally concluded that something out of the ordinary was biting, his hook be-i cause his line was broken several tim-j es and his huge cypress pole was bent, like a barrel hoop, so he got several lines, twisted them together into a! rope-like reel, fastened the biggest hook he could find to it, got a ‘hand holt' and bided his time. • ivnvuvij linn a > jcI - ing and the negro braced himself' against a tree for a hard pull, grunted loud and daring the fish or whatever it was to ‘come down on it,’ The fish did and other fishermen who were close by heard a great splashing and saw the unlucky ‘hand-hold’ fisherman as he plunged into the river and ob served in horror the eddying of the water as he sailed down the stream. They got in n boat immediately and I paddled ufter him, finally locating him about a quarter of a mile down stream. He was still on his end of the line, but he was drowned. “On the other end was a carp that weighed 5(5 pounds. Those who recov ered the poor negro’s body and weigh ed the fish say thnt it is so and told Mr. Yeldell about it.” And here is unother one from the Orangeburg Times and Democrat: “Bill Way told the following—it must be so—just after one of the heavy rains that fell around Orange burg the first of the year he found a foot long pike fish in the middle of one of his fields. Mr. Way says there is no open ditch or pond within a hun dred and fifty feet of where the fish was found and has no way to account.! for the fish being there other than it! must have come in the rain.” -—.--— The Art of Agriculture. All hail the art to which we owe Whnte’er gives happiness below: The source of all, in church or state. For should our agriculture .nop, Society must shut up shop; Our brightest belles and beaux must please To dwell in caves and hollow trees; On roots and acorns dine, like shouts, j And sup on leaves and buds, like goats ' Woodchucks would burrow in the etreet, And gaunt wolves prowl where mer-' cnants meet!— Churches by catamounts he haunted. And gruff bears growl where hymns arc chanted. Owls hoot church airs with pipe sonor ous, And croaking: crows caw caw the chorus! Should cultivators fail, their fall Would implicate and ruin all; For old Atlas bears the pack Of all the heavens on his broad hack, The farmer by his care and pains The sublunary word sustains; And if by some michnnce he stumbles The whole wide world to ruin tumbles! —T. Cl. Fessenden. It’s a queer world. Rich folks never spend their money as poor folks think they should. The main objection speed maniacs have to riding; in apolice patrol is that it is geared too low. t... ... ^ HAIL INSURANCE Hundreds of farmers are coming in and having us to insure their crops this week. .Just as soon as you have a stand—come in and have us to insure it.
