WEATHERS_President RENN DRUM_Local Editor1 Entered as second class matter January 1, 190b, at the postoffice at [ ihelby, North Carolina, under the Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. We wish to call your attention to the ; fact that it is, and has been our' custom to charge five cents per line for resolutions of respect, cards of thanks and obituary notices, after one death notice has been published. This will be strictly adhered to. TUESDAY, MAY 26, 1925. Shelby will have 2,400 school children to take care of in 1926. ! Think of it! I Our explanation of the crime age is that there are 123,000 law yers in the United States. Some one' must feed them. “Chicago Swelters With Mer cury 94,” reads news item. Why praise Windy Chi about it, who wouldn’t swelter? Our idea of 1925 neighborly affection is the friendship that exists between Charlotte and the largest city of the state. The rays of the sun may be rather warm, but before remark ing of the act think og the cot ton farmers and what the sun shine means to them. If all sons are “chips off the old block” the difference in size between the chip and block must 1 count. ] The Ellenboro couple recently ; married in a Ford show good i judgment. No doubt they started i off as they could af-ford it and i not on an expensive plan. i We wonder if the famous des- j ort cigarettes will have the same I taste now that Billy Sunday is ] cleaning up Winston-Salem ? * < Had Coolidge received every vote in the last election we now predict that he would be a com plete failure should he enter an other—after that statement about ishing The Mecklenburg Pageant is still making a deep dent in the descriptive word vocabulary of the Charlotte writers. The latest is “The Thrilled City.” Why shouldn’t bankers have stone-hearts? Do they not have the “rocks”? In another week a new lot of city dads and officials will start on what might be called a June honey-moon (?). THE BUS BUSINESS. The growth of the motor bus business in North Carolina is nothing short of marvelous. Good roads and automobiles make it possible for one to go most any where. anytime and with a won derful degree of safety. The In ler-Carolinas operates more schedules out of Shelby than any other one line and in order to as certain the safety of motor ve hicle travel. The Star learned the other day that in the 12 months this line has been operating, there has not been a fatal acci dent. The most serious damage done was to a man riding a bicy cle after dark on the York road, tn a congestion of cars and the •flare of headlights the rider of the bicycle received a broken arm, but the driver of the bus was not to blame. Inter-Catoli aas operates 21 buses daily and ,hese travel a total distance of 3, 500 miles daily—equal to the dis ance from the Atlantic to the Pacific. It was given out in a meeting )f bus operators before the cor poration commission in Greens >oro last week that there am ibout 500 buses being operated lady in North Carolina, the quipment of which is valued at t million and a half dollars and he originating salaries to em ployes amounting to nearly a mil ion and quarter annually. These pus lines are splendid revenue producers to the state of North Darolina for they pay the three cents a gallon tax on gasoline which amounts to a quarter of a milliop dollars, besides the ex tra licens6 on the seating capac ity of tpe' vehicle. SHORT MAIL SERVICE. Lincplnton as well as Shelby is suffering for the lack of proper mail service because so many of the short line trains have been taken off on account of the pas senger competition of motor bus es. Four trains have been taken off through Lincplnton and Edi tor Perkins says the mail service is thrown back where it was 50 years age. As a result of this cur tailment, the business firms of the town are embarrassed. What is true at Lincolnton is also true at Shelby. While we have lost only two trains, we have had add ed the star mail route early ev ery morning from Kings Moun tain. This was instituted after repeated requests by former Post master Roberts. If Shelby were without this early morning serv ice from Kings Mountain, bring ing newspaper and first class mail from the north and south bound Southern mainline trains, our service would be just as bad. While Shelby is suffering be. cause cf the curtailment of mail trains, our worst handicap is be tween Shelby and Charlotte where there is only one mail each day. Mail dispatched from Shel by to Cherryville and Lincolnton can leave here only once a day. We had a better service than that more than a quarter of a century ago. The Star realizes the shortage of this service be cause its subscribers at Cherry ville and Lincolnton and on routes frpm those towns are dis appointed when their paper reaches them a day or two after the date of publication. With motor buses running in every direction on regular sched ules and being compelled to main tain these schedules by the state corporation commission, some pressure should be brought to bear on the postoffice depart ment to institute mail service on these buses.
