Ninety-Three 'l Wasted Years -By REV. C.KOlUJE K. GflLLtt . Extension Department. Moody Dlbl* InnUtutr, Ch.li ago. **TEXT~ And it cum* to pass in the f<ftir hundred and eight!?th year after the Children of Israel were com** out I ot the luiul of Egypt, In the fourth : year of Solomon s reign over Israel , . . , that he began to build the house of the ljortl. — 1 Kings 6 1. One would hardly think that such a careful and exact HtHteineni would he Rev. Q. E. Guille. confrn(it<-t*Mi, yet It hits inin eon t r ml 1e t e d I) y learned gentlemen, nut u few. who toll us that there j wore 573 ye,i is from the Kxmlus to the beginning i of (he temple. Hut the Umpired 1 apostle told us the slime thing , b efore t he s e | seholu rly gentle men were heard j of. Acts 1,1 records 1 mil s account m tilts lapse of time ns follows: "About tlic spine iif -to years suf fered Me their manners In the wilder ness . . . after that Me gave unto them Judges about the space of CM years . . . and afterward they de sired a king; and pod gave unto them Saul . . . hy the sluice of -40 years. And when Me liuil removed him. Me raised up unto them Duvid to he their j king." •Mere Paul's reckoning of the years I egds, hut in 1 Kings L’:U we Mini that I David reigned 40 years, and was sue- i c*aded hy Solomon, who reigned three yfiirs and In the fourth hegan to hnlld the, temple. The sum of these numbers 1^ 57i). But neither I* Jeremiah, who wrote 1 ^vlncs, wrong in Ids account, nor Is j Paul wrong in Ids. alhelt there is tin I nppureut discrepancy of M3 years In Tt^iu. •feremlah, prophet of (tod, moved atyl speaking hy the Holy Spirit gives the Anno Dei or years of divine chro nology, while I’nnl, apostle of Jesus t iirlpt, tilled anil moved hy the same Spirit. gives the Anno Mundl or years ej^the natural chronology. The latter rules tlie actual numher of years that elapsed between the Kxoiltis and the triple building, while the former pusses over live different periods of tittle embracing from seven to forty yjju-s eiHli, dropping them from the rtttord as though they had never been. JJJ'he hook of Judges explains the mystery of these missing years. Five tttfies in that book we Unit Israel, for li|^ slus. In captivity’ to her foes: eight years under Mesopotamia, eWliteen years under Moub, twenty y^irs under Canaan, seven years un der Midinn and forty years under the PWUstlnes, making ninety-three years In* all. Anil these ninety-three years ar*»4HK'ounted by Jeremiah because of Tt divine prUictple observable ev erywhere In Scripture—that Mod who raekons time only In connection with lils earthly people Israel, cannot count tfepge years spent away from Mini. In wilting their history Me will omit no detail of their failure und sin and will tell the exact numher of years that, fur their disobedience, they suffered at" the hands of their foes. But In rfltkonlng tlic chronology Me says, “fcmr hundred and eighty years: l cannot count those years In which my people have sinfully departed from n*e.” And what warning 1* there for us la tills, “written,” us it whs, “for our ottluonlUonr ■Our soon-coming I.oril shall guther all Ills own to His Judgment seat, there to ui>|truise tltelr works. Not In \ wrath shall tliut gathering be culled j by Him "who loved us and gave Him- j self for us," but for review In order : to reward our fidelity to Him. "If any . upm's work abide . . . he shall re ceive a reward. If any man s w ork k(|'u 11 be burned be shall suiter loss; but he himself ahull be saved; yet so as by lire.” ■Then shall be remembered the days and hours of your life story and mine. But what of ttie wasted years'.' Wlmt of the days spent out of His presence, in seeking nay. own things, pursuing our own pleasures, instead of pleasing Him? Can He count these years'' Oh, let us live out the days and hours with our hearts upon that ap proaching time of reward that we may hear Him say, "Well done.” "And now little children abide in Him that when lie shall uppeur we may have confidence, and not lie ashamed before Him at His coming,” Our Life Our life Is like the dial of a clock. The hands are Hod's hands passing over and over uguln. The short baud, the hand of Discipline; the long hand, the hand of Mercy. Slowly and surely the hand of Discipline must pass, and Hod Speaks at each stroke; but over and over passes the bund of Mercy, showering down sixty-fold of blessings for each Stroke of discipline or trial; and both hands are fustoned to one se cure pivot, the great unchanging heurt of a Hod of love. Serving Others Nothing so Increases the degree of spiritual energy ;ys the glow and ardor and Joy of doing some little service for another. In this lies the real hlessed - netts, the real luxury of life.—L.
