lobby and hails and especially the
charmingly appointed table. The in
carnation of all loveliness was por
trayed in the Christmas decorations.
The symmetrical Christinas tree with
its glittering tinsel in silver and gold,
tfec artificial lake, snow banked, and
gleaming and glistening, with the
powdered snow, the snow men, and
sksigh, the miniature houses and
Santa Clauses. The lovely poinsettas
v/jth the trailing green ferns inter
wined, the crystal grouped candles,
tied with the bright red ribbons hold
ing the Christmas candles and the pot
ted poinsettas with their settings of
green, make a picture that beggar*
description and one long to be remem
bered. The place cards were Santa
Clauses and the souvenirs red rose
buds and green leaves, and concealed
in the buds were the nut cups holding
the most delicious salted pecans. A
most elegant and appetizing flvr
course dinner was served in a delight
ful manner and the beautifully gown
ed women and well dressed men en
hanced the picture of the. Christmas
festivities and beauty. After the din
gier music was enjoyed and rook play
ed until 10:30.

The announcement of the wedding
comes somewhat as a surprise, to the
friends of the prominently known
couple.
The bride is the. charming and at
tractive daughter or Mrs Hattie
Peeples of Vamvilje. Her father was
one of South Gurobna’a' best known
Baptist minister''. She received her
education at Wihthron college and
h.as since beei! a member of the fac
ulty of the Shelby high school. With
an outstanding personality and a bril
liant. mind added to her natural at
tractiveness and refinement. Mrs.
Gurley has a host of friends both in
this state end her native state.
Mr. Gurley one of the greatest
athlete;’, ever produced at N. (’. State
college is known all over Carolina.
Ilis education was revived at W, &
,1 and State, and since Wring college
he has coached successfully for. rev
era' years the athletic teams of the
Shelby high school, and i • now head
of athletics at l.eno'r-Rhyne. Hick
ory. where he is making an enviable
record.

Honoring her char mint; young
drughter, Mrs. Eugene Burgess, a
recent bride, Mrs. O. Max Gardne’
gave a beautiful tea on Friday aff*
ernoon. The spacious rooms vveta
thrown together and an air of the
Yuletide season prevailed. In the hall
the decorations were potted poinsettas
and ferns. Receiving here were ’Mrsi
S. R. Riley and Mrs. V. R. lloey. Mrs.
Riley wore a cloth of gold costume
veiled in embroidered blue tulle. Mrs.
ilocy wore black prince georgette and
embroidered cut velvet with gold lace I
trimmings In the eld fashioned par
lor wore Mrs. Gardner, Mr:., Burgers
and Mrs. Jar,. L. Webb. Mrs. Gardner
wore cyttal beaded chiffon in orchid
true with shoulder corsage of pink
roses and violets-. Mrs. Burgess was
gowned in cranberry chiffon, fur
trimmed and gold embroidered and
wore a shoulder corsage of roses and
violets. Mrs. Webb wore black Span
ish lace with touches of gold and cor
sage of violets. In the parlor the da
eorutions were pink roses and ferns
arranged in silver vases. Inviting the
guests into the dining room were Mrs
[George Blanton in ashes of roses cut
velvet, nnd Mrs. J. D, Linebcrger in
red velvet.
The dining room had for its decor
ations noinsettas, ferns and holly. The
tea table wan covered with a hand
some natural colored linen cloth with
filet luce border and insets of cut
work and filet. The central decora
tion was a large silver candelabra hole
ing red tapers, surrounding this wore
six silver candle sticks with the rod
tapers burning softly. A beautiful
large Christmas basket of red reed
tilled with poinsettas and ferns was
placed at one end of the table and
at the opposite end was a tall silver
urn from which tea was served by
Mrs. W. F. Mitchell wearing rose gcor
gette crystal beaded. Compotiors of
silver holding asserted rose mints
c< red and green and white were
placed on each corner and opposite
these were little silver baskets hold
ing the mints. They were tied with
led ribbon and fastened with bunches
of holly. Cedar wreaths tied with red
ribbons and holly hung from the win
dows. Serving in here were. Mrs. Rob
ert Andrews in taupe satin, Mrs. Wil
liam Andrews in black velvet, Miss
Stella Mureheson in midnight blue
velvet. Miss Millicent Blanton in black
velvet ar.d rhinestones trimmed. In
\ iting the guests into the library
where punch was served was Mrs. .1
A. Anthony wearing gray georgette
lace trimmed. In the library the rad
and green decorations were carried
out. Miss Margaret Anthony gowned
in gray lace over flesh served punch
assisted by Miss Margaret Williams
in pink chiffon, Miss Frances Cald
well in printed green chiffon and Mrs
Everett llouser in flesh chiffon and
lace. Mrs. S. O. Andrews in blue cut
velvet asked the guests into the living
room where the register book was
placed and presided over by Mrs. Jes
se McMurry dressed in black satin
and Mrs. Talmadge Gardner in gray
satin and gray lace. Tea, sandwiches,
cheese straws and nut bread and
mints and nuts were served in the
dining room. Quite a number of Mrs.
Gardners friends called during the
hours from three to five.
