—SHELBY SIDELIGHTS— By Bonn Drum. Miracles do happen in there mod ern days. Perhaps you'll never bump right into one, but some day go up to recorder's court nnd you'll hear ’em related first hand. Some folks will say “Shucks”, or a more emphatic word, and declare its nil bosh. That miracles happened on ly in days recorded in the Bible. How about this then: Ten colored men wore scuffling one night this week at the home of on" near Boil ing Springs. Th r • was a gun hanging on the wall. Just a. harmless, as long ns it remained there, as r knot hole. But during the scuffle that gun fell to the floor. Nothing unusual about that. The law of gravitation sees to falls. But in it downward course the gun “we t off"- -those two words have hustled many mm off into o terpity. Now even the fan that the gun “went. ofV" was not in itself un usual, but that gin swirling and dropping to the floor discharg d it self at the height of a man’s head. One odd thing. Then it happened that just at the height from the foor that th ; gun “we lt off” a man happened to standing and the bullet caught him in the cheek. Another odd thing. Perhaps it wasn’t n miracle, but many of Shely’s lovers of hunting would like to have a gun that could balance in the air, discharge and ohoot that straight, A fellow would n’t need to be such a good shot with a gun like that to hag quite a num ber of birds in one day. Guns like that arc scare. Just as scare as killings are on the court docket. There may be some connec tion between the two. Draw your own conclusions, but don’t try to draw anything on a gunhungirxg harmlessly on the wall. It might take n notion to drop and go off ut about tlxc he;ght of your head. That’s just an example of the mir acles related weekly before Record er Mull. A philosopher wanting to learn a lot about life might spend his time in the county court and not call it wasted. Seldom a Week passes that th" recorder docs not have a witness tell him that “I found the quart," or {ration, behind a stump near the road, or in some other , semi public place. Perhaps the revenue agents are hard on bootleggers, but that doesn’t cause any worry wrinkles on the' faces of the hooch dispensers. They'll sell liquor to anybody if one is to be lieve defendants in court. "No, judge, I don't know the man’s name from whom 1 bought." Even in the old bio kade days and the time when father sneaked home from the ex press office with a package under his arm—yes, even then the hlockadcr and the liquor manufacture'- gener ally knew his man before he sold him. After hearing two or three days session of recorder’s court a by stnnder would derive the idea that a man could walk out one of the roads from tow and pick up 20 gallons of booze or nuy that much and never have to tell his name. Another de duction might be that Western ( uro linians have never learned what man ufactures claim they make extracts for. Miracles ! I The docket hook at the court house is fuller of ’em than a homeless hound of fleas. If Muck Sennet. Fox and the other producers of movie comedies don’t shake a wicked lei?-—could be bath ing beauties’—then court trials will soon take the crowds away from the movies.
