The year brings no more welcome month than April, month of spring ing flowers, trout fishing, baseball and golf. It arrives when winter has out stayed hospitality and becomes an intolerable nuisance. The wary person, however is more than ordi nnr.ly alert when he perceives so charming n visitor on his threshold for there is u mischievous sparMo in her eye. Carelessness may lead to complications. Every movement on ! April t he firsrt is oer.lous. The egg at breakfast may be an unsatisfy ing vacum, and the cakes cotton in side, sugar mixed with salt and all these to the chuckling music of “April Fool.” All kinds of pranks are played and of course every body pro fesses to regard these Simple diver sions as extremely childish, but they fail to amuse all save the victim. Practical joking of the April Fool variety is almost as old as life itself. There are several origins as to this . Several explanations have been offered as to the fixing April First as “All Fool’s Day.” The most pro bable cf these dab s the institute a back to the reformation of the calen dar in 156-1. At that time New Year’.-, day was shifted to March 25th to Jem,ary 1st. Before the alteration, the New Year’s festivities lasted eight days ending on April 1st. This final day was one set apart for paying visits and making presents. When the alteration was made muddled ( headed folk became confused and ' were easy prey for the sophisticated, j who sent them out on fool’s errands | making calls and carrying gifts on j the day of the discarded celebration. | Thus the custom became the seed from which April Fooling sprang, j Tomorrow be wary and cnary lest some one make an April Fool of you In poor Robin’s Calendar for 1728 C -i ^>mtom is out into rhyme.
