OLD CD1LIQUDR GETS INTO COURT Mother of Nine Children In Grave And Father Faces Prison Term Old torn liquor is on trial in the Supreme Court of North Carolina with bells on. The choicest handi work of deviltry was exhibited in the appeal of Melvin Messer, who after living 54 years in the mountains of Haywood county faces prison term of 18 years for the murder of his wife. For 35 years of uneventful life, the mountaineer and his wife lived in their Cove Creek mountain home. To them were born nine children, five of Whom have married. Life didn’t offer them much in the way of word'ly ad vantage, but they had the mountains for company and that was much. Then entered Old Corn Liquor. It was on Sunday—the 17th of Jan uary last—that Melvin Messer and his wife of 35 years went to visit one cf their married sons, who lived about one half mile away in another moun tain cove. Mrs. Messer hadn’t been feeling well that morning, and lur husband said she took a drink of Old Corn Liquor. There was more drinking when they got'to the home of their son. It was about dark when Messer and his wife started back to their home. It was raining hard and dark. What happened on that journey home is in distinct in the memory of Melvin Mes ser, but the next morning Lillie Mes ser, the wife of 35 years and rho mother of his nine children, was found dead at the home. Her body was bruised in' many places. It wasn't one bruise that caused her death, but many, the mutiplicity of them, the doctors said. Melvin Messer said that she fell from a rook and killed herself. He told a harrowing story of how he ti ii d ui get her home and of his inability in his drunken condition to carry hei on his shoulder. There was evidence tending to show that Messer beat his wife to death, and it was this view the jury took. He was convicted of manslaughter, and Judge John M. Oglesby sentenced him to 18 years in State Prison. HAI LING RUM ON BICY( I E NEGRO FLEES I1IS BOND York, S. C.^ May 19.—A young white man of Yorkville arrested by Policeman Moyd on a charge* of drunkenness did not have to answer to driving a bicycle while under the influence-of liquor, although such a unique charge might well have been lodged against him by the policeman. When the cop came upon the intoxi cated one he was trying to ride a bike from which he had fallen several times due to the heavy cargo of li quor he is alleged to have been car rying. When his case was called be fore Mayor Steele Monday morning, the man failed to show up and his bond of $15 was declared forfeited to the town. Members of an Arkansas congrega tion now receive regular cash d’vi dends font oil discovered on the church's property. In his will Cardinal Mercier asked the pardon of any persons he may have wronged and expressed forgiv - ness to any who may have wronged him. i u DO YOU FEEL SHAKY? Every one of the negroes, women and men, little and big, lias been driven out of the town, and some of them were beaten as they were’ chased. Many of the negroes had liv ed long in Carteret, and a few of them had been born in the town. The incident probably is without precedent. Disgraceful race riots and "race wars” have oecured in numer ous town, sometimes in Southern towns, but one does not remember another case in which the whole ne gro population was ruthlessly ana violent expelled. In the larger Northern cities the evidence available is that negroes re ceive a fair measure of protection and are given many rights and privi leges. If political rights are consift ered, it must be admitted that the negro is better conditioned in a great Northern city than in a Southern com munity, but negroes seem to on j few rights in Northern tow n., villa;;,.a and rural districts. Gardner At (\>nvention (Biblical Recorder) At the Democratic Convention which was held in Raleigh April 2!)th Mr, Max Gardner, of Shelby was the out standing figure. He made a very cap tivating speech and had the Conven tion in his hand. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that he will be the next governor of North Carolina.. Occasionally the statement is made that some one who will be more pro gressive will be named, but the people believe that Max Gardner is entitled to the nomination and we do not think there is a -man in the State who could defeat him if he were to make the at tempt. Mr. Gardner is progressive but not wildly so. He does not believe in opening the throttle and going at -full speed when there Is danger of wreck ing the train by so doing.
