Byrd s Boyhood Ambition Realized’ When He Flew Over North Pole When Commander R. E. Byrd flew his plane over the north pole, he real ized the dream of boyhood days. He was the first to conquer by air plane the dreary ,artic wastes he hud often longed to explore. For him it was a double triumph. Wanderlust laid its hand up-j, Byrd ear'y in life. As a boy o£ 12 he mrged to make a trip around Up world. He finally overcame the argumenti of his mother, who opposed his roam ing tendencies, lie Started from Rich mond, Va., a city founded by his fore fathers, and made his way overland to San Francisco where he caught a steamer for the Philippines. Miss Rosamond Geraldine Mauney had as her guest Sunday, Miss A mm May Wallace. Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Hord of Hick ory, were the guests of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson Hord, Sunday. Mrs. N. E. Moore and son. N. E. jr of Winston-Salem, after a long visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C Yelton, are now with her husband visiting his parents in the eastern part of.the state. Mrs. Carr Hunt, who has been on the sick list for some time is now re cuperating. Mr. George Blanton motored to Morganton Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Warlick spent Wednesday night with her parents arid attended the commencement ex- ■ crcises at North Brook No. ‘S. Mr. Dewey Beattie of this place .is now working at Hickory. Miss Vangic Fallv who recently re turned home from Boone, spent tie week end with Mr. and Mrs. Octs Royster of this town. Mrs. Eva Mauney had an her guests at dinner Sunday evening.
