kb husk % fist ten !'***! Accidents Kven. Increase For Year In State Is Approximately IS Percent Did you know— That for the past twelve month* it has been legal to drive an automo bile 36 miles per hour on North ( ani line highways? asks the Raleigh j Times. That during the past twelve months automobiles in Norih Carolina increas ed faster than automobile accidents on the highways ? That the Increase in the speed rate j was marked by a one hundred and I sixty-seven per cent increase in deaths I from collisions between . trains and automobiles nt grade crossings? For the first time in the history of j the State automobiles are increasing more rapidly than automobile acii- ! dent deaths, figures obtained from the ! State board of health and the Auto mobile license bureau show toe' “ffirnes continues. , | 'During the year ending April 3d, j 1028, the number of automobiles in I North Carolina increased approxi- i niately 14 percent while deaths front j automobile uccidents, exclusive of j grade crossing accidents, increase .1 only 10 per cent. Strange Co-incidence. And the strange co-incidcneo is th■>t April ,10, 1020, marked the close of a twelve months’ period during which | thu legal speed limit in North Caro lina had been fnerensed from thirty | miles an hour to thirty-five miles an j hour. Whether or not people drive mor > \ safely at thirty-five miles per hour 1 than thirty miles per hour is a mat ter of argument, but something hap pened to save a lot of lives on North Carolina highways during the past year. If the rate of increase in accident deaths had prevailed during the past twelve months Unit prevailed, dur ing the lust twelve months of a ttaib- 1 ly-mile per hour maximum, -117 per-1 sons would have been killed instead I of 1136. Crossing Deaths Increase On the other hand, if the rate of increase in grade crossing fatuities had remained constant there would have been only eighteen deaths dur ing the twelve months’ period as against forty. On first blush then it would seem that the increased speed rate had saved eighty-one lives on the high ways and cost twenty-two at il-e grade crossings, but of course there are factors of chance, weather, law enforcement, safety education to i.e tak« n into consideration. Training Finicky Children To Eat j How to make a child eat is a ques i tion that troubles a great many par | ents. The mother leprns just what ...foods her child should have and pre | ■ pares them properly, but how to, get l .the child to eat them? j . One important step toward this J goal is to secure the cooperation of .the father, saga Anna Dee Weaver, ? writing in llygenia for June. If a i ' child sees his father eating spin j - aoh or carrots and enjoying them, he 3 will want to eat them in order to grow log and strong like daddy, j r-r Small servings will often encour * "age a child, while the sight of a large ^ amount of food appalls him. It is "J i easy to eat a few mouthfuls, and grad ij dually the amount may be increased, g Dainty service and attractive color 3 'combinations will appeal to the child. i -He will not eat carrots alone, but tj combined with peas he may like them. 8 77S Highly seasoned foods, such as k pickles, dull the child’s appetite for 1 'the bland, more nutritious kinds. # - * • Indiscriminate eating between meals i will take away the child’s appetite - for his regular meals. If a child will u not eat at meal time, he should not f , ;be alio wad any food until the next h ‘ niael. One or two meals may he | safely skipped, and often this radical ’ • -method is necessary when the child r to respond to other methods. (lave Teacher Advice p; On Johnny’s return to school af*er ■ being away several weeks the teacher ' told him that he must “bring a written .excuse for hi* absence from one of his parents. The next day he presented ■ ihis note from the mother. — “Dear teacher: Please excuse John “ ny for being out of school for the last three weeks. He fell from a tree and t rofee Ms arms.
