Judge Webb Makes Speech of Ded ication. Clyde lioey Presents Justice Portrait. Ruthcrfordton, Nov. 3.—Nearly 1,000 people attended the dedication of Rutherford county’s new $250, 000 courthouse here today. Attor ney M. L. Edwards was in charge of the services. Special music by Mrs. Nell Padgett Norris of For est City was a feature of the day. Attorney 1'rud 1). Hamrick in troduced the speaker of the day, Judge James E. Rutherford c< nnty has had five courthouses built during I,or his tory, including the present one. In the earlv days of the county, j during the close of the 18th cen tury, court was h /I at different homes. Usually the largest log . house in the’ community was the! place for the trial of cases. The first court house that Rutherford i county ever erected was located on Shepherd’s creek', now Holland’s creek, about two miles north of, Rutherfordton. It was a log house j and cost a few hundred dollars. The second temple of justice was erected on what is now South Main Street. In 1838 the third courthouse j was erected on the lot whore the ; Sun Printing office now is located. It was burned down the night of December 2-1, 1907. I Fourth in 1H0X The fourth hall of justice for the county was built on the present sauaro in 1008. L as of brick con struction. The total cost was about $47,000. The county commissioner; who built it are all living; The are: C. M. Lynch, chairman, Joe M Glover and J. M. Miller. In the enrlv part of 1925 the county officials decided that ihe court house was too small, out-of date and dangerous. !t bad been condemned by various experts'. It was sold in June 1025 for $50o. Contract w;>s soon let for the con struction of the present magnifi cent edifice which was recently completed at a total cost of $200, 000 including furniture and fix tures. There is no more attractive or commodious courthouse in the South, for a county the size of I Rutherford than one just complet ed. The county commissioners made a close study of the leading court houses of this and adjoining states, It Is two stories high, besides a large basement. Overman Denies He Will Resign Senator Lee S. Overman, ex pressing bis pleasure at being re elected Tuesday to the Congress of } the United States over h;« ««**>••.]] ent, Johnson Hayes, denied that he had any intention of resigning b( j fore completing his term. , Senator Overman was comment '* ing upon a story emanating from | Washington to the effect tlvn !io health was broken and that it was being freely predicted in the capi tal that tha junior Nor-h Carolina senator would not complete his1 term in offi v which ex circs in 1932. “Mv htnbh is as good as ever,” Senator Overman asserted, and laid the onus for the reports to his political enemie... ‘T fully cx- ! r>ect to serve cut my >rm ami have no idea of resigning before! then.” Senator Overman was re-el; etc-t yesterday by the voters of North Carolina by a majority - f mere than 100,000 over his Republican opponent. Catawba’s Delegate Married in Shelby ! L. F. Klutz, Republican nwni- j ber of the house of representative s , from Catawba county, who wen j out over Gus Self, prominent Deni- j ocrat by a majority of 121 votes, i married Mrs Maggie Lou Cline i Turner, widow of the late Charlie ] Turner of Cleveland couiuy. Mj. Klutz is a native of Catawba being born in Maiden. Over 9,000 votes wore cast in the Catawba county election on Tuesday. Mr. Self re ceiving 4704 votes and Mr. Klutz 4825, according to returns pub- j lishtd in the'Hickory Daily Record. J Representative Klutz was educa ted at South Fork institute; Ca tawba college; Washington and university, Valparaiso univer sity, where he received the B. A. degree ir. 1910; and degree of Bach elor cf oratory in 1911; Trinity college law school 1912-13 and Wake Forest law school 1914.
